Continuous sidewalks are key to making our community more vibrant. Unfortunately, Crabapple (starting with the section we are talking about through the 5 pts. intersection at Broadwell) are inaccessible because they are discontinuous, even for people without any mobility challenges.

Because I wholly believe pedestrian features make our communities so much richer to live in, I support every effort needed to complete those which are incomplete, and modifying those needing modification, so that we can promote healthy lifestyles and enjoy living here even more than we do now.

Our Director of Public Safety has been advised of the complaint regarding speeding. Our traffic enforcement officers will give the area "special attention" as resources and other demands allow. Please note, however, that we have monitored that area fairly recently and found few drivers exceeding posted speeds to the extent necessary for traffic citations to be issued in accordance with Georgia Law.

With respect to the potential for a crosswalk near the Kroger shopping center, the City of Alpharetta discourages mid-block crossings, as they encourage conflicts between pedestrians and motorists. This is especially true at this location due to topography and traffic volumes.

Sidewalk connectivity is an issue along Crabapple Road. Both the City of Alpharetta and the City of Milton are aware of the gaps within our respective jurisdictiosn and are working to coordinate improvements as part of larger projects on the corridor.

Thank you for taking this complaint into consideration. However, i have a number of questions/concerns regarding the comments posted by COAADMIN

1. Under Georgia law, how fast exactly does one have to go to be 'violating' the speed limit posted?? I have seen the contrary, being very FEW cars actually STICKING TO THE SPEED LIMIT in that stretch of road, especially since it goes downhill going north.
2. Can you suggest how pedestrians are supposed to cross near the Kroger Shopping centre from the businesses across the street without a properly marked cross walk in a technically 'legal' way and in a practically safe way? Please bear in mind there is a school at that junction and children may be involved in the pedestrian crossing.
Also, you mention traffic volumes are not high enough in point 1, but then too high in point 2?
On Crabapple rd, heading south toward Roswell, there are several "mid-block" crossings, which don't appear to be any different from the location we are talking about.
3. The side walk which is missing is clearly in the Alpharetta township as it is before you reach Green rd.

Can you give us an approximate timeframe in which you are working to coordinate improvements and what exactly are the improvements you can suggest or have in mind? Are we talking in the next couple of months or will it take years?

I am also wondering about the bike lanes? That would make travelling by bike a lot safer as well. As I am currently taking my children to school in my bike and trailer, it is very treacherous to drive on the road. I have purchased red flashing lights to attract the attention of drivers, but many are on the phone and not really looking.

In order for police officers to cite drivers for speeding, the driver must be exceeding the posted limit by at least 10 mph. Most vehicles are remaining below that level. Again, our officers will give the area "special attention" as resources and other demands allow and will cite drivers when appropriate.

The City of Alpharetta strongly discourages mid-block pedestrian crossings on roadways; especially those that are commuter corridors. Pedestrians should cross at signalized intersections to ensure the highest level of safety. Based upon traffic patterns along the Crabapple Road Corridor and the fact that the road is a State Road, it is highly doubtful that a traffic signal would be placed at the entrance to the shopping center. The existing mid-block crossings to which you refer are not within the jurisdiction of the City of Alpharetta.

The City of Alpharetta does not currently have plans for the addition of bicycle lanes on Crabapple Road. We have worked closely with local bicycle advocacy groups to formulate a system of bicycle lanes and "sharrows" within the community. Crabapple Road was not a corridor that was identified by the groups as being a desirable route.

Regarding the addition of sidewalks to address gaps along the corridor, we do not currently have timelines for such activity.

The City of Milton is developing a plan in conjunction with teh Georgia Department of Transportation to improve the intersection of Green Road and SR372 / Crabapple Road. Any sidewalk improvements at the intersection would take place in conjunction with the larger improvement project.

At this time, we do not have information as to the timing of that project.
