Our officers have been giving this area heightened attention since this issue was reported. There have been only a few large vehicles noted, and these were mostly school buses. Further, very few vehicles were exceeding the posted speed limit, and the majority of these were doing so by five mph or less.
We will continue to patrol the area; however, this issue report is being closed.
Thank you for looking into the issue! I appreciate the help. I would however be interested if anyone has been patrolling around 5am. Everyday around this time there are big trucks going down Broadwell. This morning there were a few and one was using very loud brakes while heading toward Rucker. It wouldn't be such a big deal if it wasn't 5am and the whole house is sleeping. I personally don't think that semi trucks should be allowed on such a residential street.
Our officers have patrolled the area at various times, including the 5:00 AM window. In fact, one of our police captains has parked and observed the location for 1 hour to 45 minutes around 5:00 AM on multiple days. No semi-trucks were observed on any of those occasions; however, one or two dump trucks were observed.
Truck traffic is not prohibited on Broadwell Road, nor is Broadwell categorized as a neighborhood street. The road is functionally categorized as a "collector road", meaning that it is designed to collect traffic and channel it to arterials, highways, and freeways. In general terms, most neighborhood streets are found inside of subdivisions.
With respect to the braking noise, it is possible that the vehicles are using "Jake Brakes." These devices use the compression from a diesel engine to slow a vehicle and reduce wear and tear on the standard vehicle brakes. Are you hearing something that sounds like a squeak / squeal or something that sounds somewhat like a vehicle with loud exhaust pipes?
Speed enforcement activities in the area continue; however, there has been no change in the driving behavior from what was referenced in our earlier responses on this issue post.
During their April 14 meeting, City Council will consider an amendment to the City Noise Ordinance that would prohibit the use of "compression brakes" (also commonly referred to as "Jake Brakes" on the streets and roadways within Alpharetta.
