On November 9th there was a town hall meeting at the 17th where we were informed of some of the new policies that were to be initiated within the area as a response to the spike in recent shootings, muggings and assaults, as well as robberies. Captain Anthony Washington stated that he and the police department were to become more proactive in an attempt to slow the rate of more violent offenses that have been occurring within the district. Part of this plan was to place beat cops, bicycle police as well as plain clothed police throughout the neighborhood with a concentration within the areas of greatest concern. The most likely reason the police are in your neighborhood is because of the long established drug trade as well as the most recent shootings involving a turf war. Although these most recent incidents were centered within the 13th and Catharine St area, 16th and Catharine still remains a troubled spot, and a newly formed gang known as "Eightball" has recently admitted to involvement in a shooting within the area.
Captain Washington also informed us of the recent problems within the area of 22nd and St Albans Street, mentioning 2221 St Albans Street as playing a big role in drug dealing within the neighborhood and stating the possible (most likely) involvement of this house's tenants in the recent spike in violent assaults and muggings-- Namely, Rasul Turner, AKA Scoop and his drug dealing associates. I've been informed that Turner has had his probation revoked--so this may account for his and his associate's invisibility at 2221 within the last few days. I'm not sure if he has been arrested, so if anyone does see him or notices an up tick in drug dealing from SAS, please call 911 or file a anonymous tip on the PPD website. Captain Washington also warned all to be cautious when walking through this part of the neighborhood.
There were several areas of interest to Capt. Washington and he did tell us of all blocks that would see an increase in police presence--I just do not remember all of the specific block by block details.
All of this information was passed on to all who attended. While most of the people at the meeting were from the Point Breeze neighborhood, there were two people from the north side of Washington Avenue. Thanks to all who took time out of their schedules and whose presence expressed a concern for the safety of their neighbors.
