Talk to them nicely, explain that they need to clear the street at night, someone may accidentally run over and ruin their hoop. Kids have been playing in the streets for years. It is better than them running the streets and getting into trouble. Be a little more tolerant.
i complained before, well their basket ball hoop is back on the street, first block off baldwin on west fairmount, it time for the police to ticket first time and pull the hoops out and sell them at auction. i am tired of this. police go up and down my street at least one time a day, make a note once and for all get rid of the traffic hazzard. for all concerned..
The basketball problem is on just about every street in the lebaron subdivision. They play on Lenox day and night right in front of my home. It becomes a nuisance when they do not move out of the way when cars go up and down. You can remind them all you want (which i have done) that they are not invincible and they will get hit, but they wont learn unless their actual parents or guardians discipline them (which they do NOT). I suggest calling some metal scrappers to come by and take all basketball hoops that are illegally sitting in the street. they take anything metal and it adds up.
This is also an issue that can be discussed at our Highwood-Lebaron Neighborhood Watch group tonight. We meet at 6:30pm at St. Paul's Lutheran church the 4th Tuesday of every month. Come and share your concerns. Our councilman will also be there quite frequently.
REALLY ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE THEM SELLING DRUGS ON THE CORNER OR SAY PLAYING BASKETBALL IN THE STREET,BREAKING INTO YOUR HOMES OR PLAYING BASKET BALL IN THE STREET,STEALING CARS OR PLAYING BASKETBALL IN THE STREET. THERE ARE PLENTY OF REAL CONCERNS THE PPD NEED TO DEAL WITH OTHER THAN KIDS PLAYING BASKETBALL.
Common sense: I agree with you. We have had the cops called on us and they showed up to tell us to stop playing in the streets and we had a group of great neighborhood kids.
It is an item for discussion however because it is against city ordinance and it does put kids and drivers in danger. Those are the facts. We have to come up with something for the kids to do though! I would much rather deal with kids playing basketball in the street than causing trouble in dark corners. And there are too many unsafe dark corners in our city, some of which are public parks where they should be able to play!
the problem is easy to fix, just have the "KIDS" remove the basketball hoop when they are done playing in the public traffic streets so the legal cars, truck may have there right of way. see problem FIXED , now MoM and DaD get your KIDS too remove the problem or lose the HOOPS then there is NO PROBLEM.
Is there hoops available on the high school grounds for these kids to play? If not, why not? I would much rather have them playing basketball for fun than doing other things. I agree that the "stuff" has to be put away when the kids are through and when the sun goes down, it is time to stop. Also respect the traffic because you do NOT have the right of way. Parents, do something! You are the ones that are responsible for your children!
We were parents who were out there playing with and supervising our group of kids while they were playing, the basketball hoop wasn't even in the street. We were directing the kids out of the way of drivers because they were in the game and we made sure they moved when they didn't see. We still got called on by the police and my husband spoke with them because it is against city ordinace and we could have gotten fined pretty heftily if the cop didn't have mercy on us.
The point is , we need to work together as a community. If you don't have kids be a little more patient as long as they are doing something constructive. Call the police on them when they are spraying graffiti or peddling drugs not when they are playing basketball.
Many kids don't have involved parents and need adults encouraging them instead of scowling at them.
The only open school in this area is Pontiac High. As far as I know , they have no outdoor basketball hoops. Lebaron is closed and unfortunately , if there are no supervising adults , is an unsafe hang out.
Bottomline,we cannot rely on city government and the police to help our community, we need to invest in it ourselves and sometimes that means a bit of care and unselfishness.
It is the citizens that make the community , not the politicians or city workers who don't even live here.
actually itbelongs to 777 second. do not supervise the kids. they make a mess in street. person that hit it filed police report. several people called about kids not moving out of street and it is still there. should be removed.
