Description
A number of folks have noted traffic safety concerns at this location. At the same time folks have really come to enjoy the pocket park. A kind neighbor has created the following suggestion for how to improve both situations. See attached for his suggestion as well as some temporary measures to pilot the idea.

My impression with the complete streets requests is that they are not very transparent and a bit of a black hole. Where can you see the existing requests?
I think this would be a project that we could fund raise for if the City was willing to let us close the street to start.

nice try but (Invité)
It seems that this proposal will funnel even more traffic onto Willow St., which is already overburdened.
"When the State St. bridge reopens...." hahahahahaha. I don't think the State St. bridge is going to reopen anytime soon, like, within the next five to ten years.
How about getting the State of Ct. to eliminate the left hand I91 exit 6, northbound ramp, and move the I91 exit 6 southbound ramp to land on State St., then eliminate left hand turns, from State St. onto Mechanic / Lawrence St.
Then build a train Station, for the New Haven, Hartford, Springfield line somewhere between Ferry and James St....
I will keep dreaming...

Will you guys post the results of that conversation here as well for those of us who can not make the meeting?

Hey Rob,
How do I see the status of a complete streets request? I see the original applications but don't really understand the process. As an example I am curious about the Chapel Street bus shelter request. How would one know if their support for this proposal and if there is a timeline.
Thanks,
Ben

I smell a pop-up party to test out this space....
It would be great to see a test run!
I'm new to the area, but it seems like blocking off the part of mechanic adjacent to the park would be best. You'd take away that awkward, oblique intersection of mechanic and state and have a more square intersection with state and lawrence.
My other fear is that if lawrence was made into the park/public space, you wouldn't have the visibility or the activity from the restaurant that you'd get by blocking off mechanic. It would also be able to be seen from further south on state -- therefore attracting ppl to walk further north to this lesser-trafficked area. I envision selling this program as the "anchor" of upper state street to promote more activity in those old factory buildings.
I really look forward to see what happens here!

Hello, this post just came to our attention. Since it is over a year old, and no Complete Streets request is on file, we are considering it closed. This is to help us better manage the volume of posts on the website. If interest still exists in improving this area, please feel free to submit a "Complete Streets" request. Below is our standard message for older posts. In it you will find links to the necessary information. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office at 203 946-6417.
Standard message:
This issue is being closed on SeeClickFix due to the amount of time that has lapsed. However, if concern still exists regarding this issue, please visit the Engineering Department’s Complete Streets website. Link Below:
http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/Engineering/completestreets.asp
There you will find a “Complete Streets Manual” and “Project Request Form”. On October 23, 2008, The New Haven Board of Aldermen unanimously passed an order creating a nine member Complete Streets Steering Committee to guide the development of the following elements for the purpose of addressing the status of city streets: policy document, design manual, public process, educational campaign and traffic enforcement.
A focal point is to include feedback and ideas for street improvements from members of the community. You will also find previously submitted project requests from other community members. If this issue still exists please submit a “Project Request Form”. As a resident, you are not required to design anything. Instead, use the "Complete Streets Manual" as a showcase of the different types of traffic calming measures that may be used.

Thanks folks,
I'm going to re-open as I think this becomes more important with the redevelopment of Starr Supply. There are also a number of folks following this ticket.
Thanks for being so proactive on SCF. I won't judge you for the open issue :)

Thank you for re-opening this issue. Fixing the situation and improving parks access shouldn't depend on whether (or not) a private development happens.
Can the City initiate its own "request form" based on this SeeClickFix ticket? There's enough info here. Improving access to the park just requires a basic understanding of pedestrian-centered street design, which clearly is not there at the moment.

As approved by the Board of Alderman, the resource allocation committee is only accepting requests through the request form process. In part, this is to help manage the volume of requests to those that communities are serious about and are focused.
SeeClickFix is a terrific platform for these types of conversations, generating ideas, and community collaboration, however, the volume and variability of posts to the site is significant. The city does not have the means to find and generate all potential project requests, nor will it act as a filter for requests before they reach the allocation committee.
As you said, there is a large amount of information and collaboration on this ticket which is important. If you choose to submit a request form, please do include and reference it as supporting documentation.
If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks for reopening Ben!
I'd consider filing a complete streets request form..
I'll chat offline with some neighbors to see if there's still interest.

Thank you City of New Haven Engineering. However, at the time of the legislation, it was indicated that either the City or residents could submit a request form.
It seems that City staff should initiate a request form when it feels that a situation is of concern to them. It shouldn't always have to wait an unknown number of years for some group of residents or the local Alder to point out that there is a problem somewhere. I agree that the City can't find every request based on SeeClickFix, but if staff feel that something is important to address, they should begin to address it immediately.
In any case, I hope that a form is submitted, one way or another.

Has anybody heard if the new development might be taking over this street such that it is no longer a road? Seems like a good opportunity.
