In addition to focusing on speeding, we should focus on crosswalks. The two are related.

This is what every crosswalk in London looks like. A similar solution would be great at intersections like those along Townsend Avenue.

It isn't very expensive to raise a crosswalk like this, and it adds tremendously to property values by making it easier to walk around and reducing the number of outright speeders. These types of improvements tend to slow traffic down by at least 5-10 miles per hour on average.

If we want to see higher property values (not to mention reduce the chance of a child, family or elderly person getting hit on their way down Townsend Avenue for a community program), our streets need to be great places to live, work and play, not just drive down at 35 miles per hour.

Studies show that when raised crosswalks like these are installed, injury rates drop dramatically. Please contact your city and state representatives and ask for them to be installed the next time the street is repaved, along with other measures to create safer streets.

You can't control speeding through traffic enforcement alone.

..."the concept is simply to slow down for safer streets. Whatever else that can be said about them the Woodward Ave. traffic calming roundabouts, and speed traps in general, help accomplish that. Would you have a family suffer the needless tragedy of a fatality because some poor sap might be 10 seconds late for work? Because a miserable 10 SECONDS is about all you'll save speeding down Townsend-while burning up a lot more of your GA$$ money. Who's up for Vehicular Manslaughter and resultant jail time, fines, suspended license, lawsuits, retribution, probation etc. etc?

BTW, thank you for the 'Radar Gun Camera Trailer with Night Vision' that just went up on Townsend. Yes, AFTER the two back to back accidents but it's a start. Now ALL those ignorant speeding LAW BREAKERS can be ticketed automatically by mail.

This fine citizen hurtled his 7,000 pound Ford Excursion past us at approx 60 mph on Townsend...only to have to brake heavily and sit at the Main St. red light. We drove the 30 mph speed limit, caught the green light right behind him and got his tag: CT reg. DF-4237 (with tinted/smoke plastic cover).

The city's complete streets policy was adopted unanimously this fall, and there are forms within the new manual for requesting changes like these.

Contact the city's transportation department and/or newhavensafestreets (at) gmail.com (a local advocacy group) if you need assistance requesting these types of changes to your street.

Many of your neighbors agree this is a major problem and that changes should be made ASAP.

The speeding drivers seem to enjoy coming through Fort Hale Park on Woodward Avenue and flying around the corner there too. I mean, come on! The boneheads at the city spent a gazillion dollars installing traffic circles that didn't seem to stop the speeding at all. A cop needs to sit at the park where the fishing pier is ALL NIGHT and pull over speeders. It's ridiculous. I don't see what the hurry is, really. Are people rushing home to sit down to play x-box? What a world in which we live...

Low grade speed bumps are the answer. They are self-enforcing, because if you hit them at over 35 your alignment is shot. I wouldn't hold my breath on the police or for the transportation division to address your issue - but I would contact your alderman.

I'm on the other side of I-95 on Townsend Av and the problem exists here too.. the only benefit is that I don't have to go far to get crash pictures for my Flickr group. Townsend Av is a state road with a fairly high traffic volume, I doubt the state would be willing to install speed bumps. In addition, recent experience with speed bumps in a relatively low traffic residential area in East Haven (Dodge Av) showed they caused more problems than they solved - mainly due to the excess noise they created.

The city should con$ider the up$ide of expanded traffic enforcement on Town$end Av - just think of all the dollar$ in traffic fine$ they can collect from the $peeder$, perfect incentive for a ca$h $trapped city!
