We lived at that corner many years ago, and actually had a car totaled that was parked legally near the intersection, when a car turning and a car going straight crashed and spun out, crushing our car and narrowly missing some pedestrians. Controlling speeds on the Boulevard is important. This is an attractive residential street, but is often treated as a highway because of its nature as a higher volume road. Installing a nice crosswalk area with traffic calming at Chapel (and farther down near Route 34, where it transitions from a higher speed boulevard into more of a neighborhood road) would give the road more of a neighborhood feel and encourage crossings to the park.

the city would do well to use more dedicated turning lanes in general to achieve greater efficiency. i'm sure this would result in less red-light running.

There have been numerous studies and plans for calming traffic on Rt. 10 from Kimberly Ave to Skiff St in Hamden. The only thing I've seen come from them are the 'rubber duckies' in the southbound turn lane onto Legion Ave. They've helped a bit but it is still very dangerous crossing there.

West River Memorial Park is virtually inaccessible for most residents. There is a crosswalk at North Frontage but you have to risk your life on Rt 34 to get to it. There is a crosswalk at Derby Ave. In neither crosswalk is there a welcoming entrance into the park. There's no gate. I believe you have to step over a small fence and tumble down a hill to get in. And should you make it to the crosswalks, to cross EBG into the park on foot you need to be quick and a bit suicidal.

We don't have much in our neighborhoods to keep our kids active and occupied. We can't afford to build community centers in every neighborhood and if we could get the facilities we can't afford the staff. We forget that we already have community centers. We have our parks. It's a shame we can't get to them.

Yes, this is still most definitely an issue. As the previous comment said, many more streets in New Haven could use a designated turn lane. One example is the Grasso & Whalley intersection northbound, which is one lane only according to the police department (not that I've ever seen cars comply with this).
