Here is my response to this . This sign is confusing is it no left turn into quik check or out of quik check? I use the light myself as it makes it easier no matter which direction you want to go.
The 3 signs are not confusing 2 are clearly an arrow crossed out pointing to QC the third is a sign posted by quick check that plainly spells out NO LEFT TURN.By the way there is also a no left turn sign on the way out as there is no left turn coming out of QC onto Albany Ave. either.
I have seen 2x where a car "zipped" in making a left turn in and almost caused a HUGE accident with someone at the pumps....in my opinion THAT is why no one should be allowed to turn in there. KPD just needs to sit there and ticket everyone that does it. Not only will people finally start to understand they can't do it, but it will generate some needed money for the city.
You have to get a police car to come and sit to grab the violators. In order to get a police car to do that you have to go to a town or city public meeting and make your request in public at the public meeting. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO IDENTIFY YOURSELF if you don't want to. It is against the Open Meetings Laws of the State of New York for you to be required to identity yourself in order to speak at a Public Comment period, and you can tell the Board so if you want to and then request the police car. If there is a police commission that meets, you can go there instead and request a "stake out". And, you can video tape all this motoring madness and bring it with you, put in on You Tube, Local Public Access, etc. You might also try and get the gas station to reconfigure their exits so that people making wrong turns will be forced to make the correct ones. How much does it cost to put in some posts and cement?
Did you go to the local planning board meetings when this gas station was being proposed. You could have had input then. If the local planning board erred, so then did the County Planning Board because nothing could have gone through without their approval as well? You see, this is how self-created hardships are approved for the privileged business owner; mistakes against the public are made in the businessman's favor. I see it a lot where I live, and so will you. Find out what the commercial property tax rate is for this business, what is it classified as and are residential property owners subsidizing it by paying a tax rate the same as the business'. You might be surprised as to what you find out.
NYSDOT, the local planning board, and the county planning board all required that the access to this site from Albany avenue be restricted to right-in/right-out turns only. Any left-hand turns were required to be done at the lighted intersection.
The best solution is to remove the signs and allow Left Turns.
Safety is not the issue here as the speed limit is very low along this roadway.
Personally... I don't stop at that Quick check, because it is painful to negotiate into the store location. Funny, I go down to Hess where left turns are allowed.
Figure that.. Why?
Ama - exactly the wrong solution. It is always the best solution to consolidate turning movements into single locations, particuarly left-handed turns. Reduces the number of conflict points.
one of the issues is that the curbing where the right-in/right-out is located is not restricted enough to dissude the left-hand turn. It has to result in going over a curb/beating up the car to make the illlegal left.
And mostly, its just an enforcement issue.
Quite frankly - making the left-hand turn illegally - if you do it, you're taking an ill-advised/unneccessary risk (not at this location, but anywhere left-hand turns are disallowed.
Like I said, if there is a double yellow line in the center of the road, than anybody making a turn to cross over the double yellow line is making an illegal turn, left or right.
These drivers only make $35,000 a year, and big 18 wheeler truck driving is one of the top three most stressful occupations in the country, besides being a police man or a village mayor. So if you think a policeman is going to take kindly to the driver or to you, try again. Or, you could stop shopping at Dollar General, and in that way, pass the buck.
personally, if i were a part of this planning board, to avoid this problem there should not have been any access to this store via albany avenue whatsoever ..... problem solved!!!
What a maroon. What is the commercial property tax rate for this endeavor, and what is assessed at? See your local assessor office. Then compare the tax percentage rate for commercial properties to your own, the residential rate. If both tax rates are the same, than go to the Village Board or the Town Board. Oh, sorry, I thought I was in New Platz, where both rates are the same, and the residential property owners are subsiding the commercial class. Wrong turn.
buford - the original plan was access via the side streets only. the city relented on right-in/right-out. Just wasn't designed well enough to actually prevent the turning movements. The curbing work to discourage it is very weak..
