As more algae and plants grow, others die.

This dead organic matter becomes food for bacteria that decompose it.

With more food available, the bacteria increase in number and use up the dissolved oxygen in the water.

When the dissolved oxygen content decreases, many fish and aquatic insects cannot survive.

This results in a dead area.

Algal blooms may also be of concern as some species of algae produce neurotoxins.

Thank you for reporting this issue, and I apologize that you had a frustrating experience. This location has multiple property owners joined next to each other, so things can get a little complicated. There are portions of the District’s property including inside the ditch that have debris that we will remove. The adjoining properties are owned by CalTrans and a private owner.

I understand there are issues that need to be resolved under management... I also understand most waterways have a minimum fifteen foot easement on both sides. The Sheriff and Police task force needs to be apprised of this and continue their vigilance on rouge camping...its ashame we have to strip away all our landscaping to get the point across that communal trash generating camps are not tolerated within our beautiful city.

And yet no matter the danger, the sanitation issues, the crime NO MATTER no one stands up to be accountable, LAZY jerks Cal Trans cannot be bothered to even pick up trash bags that VOLUNTEERS pick up for free while taxpayer dollars go to that worthless dept. And the private property owners, get a free ticket? Trying to get the legal system to make them clean up their own property? What a joke, what a bloody joke. Its no wonder this city is renowned for its filth and the cities ineffectiveness in getting anything done. Meanwhile every homeless person, every jerk that wants to dump trash they all know where to go...................VALLEJO.

Thank you for reporting again. Vallejo Flood & Wastewater District, along with other public agencies, work tirelessly to address illegal dumping and trash issues. The specific issue mentioned here is on the CalTrans side of the fence but has broken through and is spilling into our District’s waterway. We have removed the trash and repaired the fences and gates multiple times and will continue to monitor the area. More fencing is planned behind the new Tesla dealership. It is an ongoing challenge and one that is addressed frequently.
