RAs a property owner and business owner in the immediate area, I will reach out to an attorney and collect enough signatures to file a class action law suit against the city of Antioch, this is unacceptable and enough is enough. Also, know that the first person that will be named as responsible of letting this be out of control will be Lamar Thorpe who is the advocate for homeless and drug addicts.

Nando, I 100% agree with you! This problem has existed many years before this Covid situation. The city officials are able to correct this if they want to....but it seems they want to coddle these homeless people, rather than sweep this whole city of this big filthy mess! In March of 2013, I sent an email with photos to the Union Pacific president--Mr. Koraleski (and seven of his corporate officers) requesting cleanup of their property in Antioch. Mr. Michael Grant (Oakland office of UP) replied quickly :-) and the area was clean. In August of 2014, the process was repeated.

Antioch has had a homeless issue for much longer than Covid-19. I recall them in the downtown area in the 70s-80s. Remember, vagrants were blamed for the burning down of the Towne House Hotel at the intersection of I (eye) & 2nd Streets

They also set fire to the bridge on the walking path near the new Marina, cost the City over 3k to repair it. That was in the 90's

Now we have RV's camping out at night in the RiteAid shopping center and drug deals happening with cats coming and going next the too Global auto parts and you can here them arguing about being shorted on the drug purchases on a continuous basis. There have been several fires set by the homeless on the railroad tracks and at the RiteAid shopping center by the filthy dumpsters. This city doesn't care about the citizens of Antioch. Now they are all going to be focusing on re-election in Nov and making all these political promises that never happen. We need to get this Class Action Suit started immediately before they start putting up the re-election trash all over the city. They need to be held accountable for they're misleading and cheating this city of tax payers money that they haven't earned honestly!

Show your opposition to this council in November by voting every one of them out of office and installing new blood.

Please take the simple step of closing up the gates to prevent re-entry. The unlocked gates are not doing the job. Add fencing material to solve this situation--the track is not active so just close off the access. Talk with the folks at UP after erecting a real barrier.

Time to stop softening the terms used to describe who vagrants are. Some are truly homeless and need help. As a society we need to find solutions. However, taxpayers are tired of hearing terms like urban campers, un-housed etc. Antioch has a population of vagrants, those that prefer the lifestyle and who are the source of the trash and garbage that follow them. The city, Caltrans and the railroad need to do a better job of policing these problem people in Antioch by identifying those that really need our help and sympathy. TBA

This problem is outrageous. Everyone who comes into Antioch can see the filth and vagrants lining both sides of A Street, just what this city needs to attract business and potential residents. One of the biggest problems is the do gooders and outreach groups that provide these people with stuff on a daily basis. As long as they get the things they need they are NEVER going to go away. Address this and some of the problems go away. Make the vagrants go to a place to get things and services. Today, just 1/2 an hour ago there were two cars parked on the West side of A Street on the railroad tracks when a police car drove by, he/she did nothing. What is this? Break the law and our police turn a blind eye? Lastly, when they get run out again, don't allow them to pile there CRAP on the sidewalk and relocate the same stuff again, CONFISCATE/DUMP it. Sorry, this taxpayer is fresh out of sympathy. TBA

Antioch City Council is ignoring this issue, its been ongoing for over 5 years now. City of Antioch Either needs to be replaced or Take Action.

I was just notified this request has been open for 691 days. 691 DAYS AND IT'S STILL THERE. What is wrong with our city? I'll tell you, our feckless Council wants this, it's the truth only way the Council majority can justify spending 12.5 million dollars to buy and operate a motel for vagrants. Big mistake folks. The community is going to be stuck with this albatross long after the current Council is gone. Higher taxes, more demands on our police Department and more vagrants in Antioch. FOOS

Ok, this has been open for 721 days and what's changed. They're still there and they're going to continue to occupy this site. Why, because there's no active enforcement. The railroad just cleared them out and the next day they were back. A big reason, there's a group, i believe it's the white pony express that sets a food distribution center next to the encampment and the County rolls up every week with their mobile clinic. Why leave, they get everything they want. Bigger question is why doesn't the railroad arrest them, they're trespassing. With as much time and money the railroad has spent you would think they would try another avenue. FOOS

We just discussed the problems at a meet and great event with the police department. just now we observed a "mobile health services" van with some kind of official seal on the side of it in front of the BAART facility on Sunset. As if there weren't enough problems with the facility now vagrants are lined up for free health services. Oops, I used the FREE word, nothing is free, we pay for it, again and again and again. Antioch is turning into a community that few come here to live and raise a family and the fault lies at the feet of our FECKLESS COUNCIL and their policies. Foos

To be Honest. the Antioch city council needs to be voted out in order for their to be a change. since they are not doing anything about it. its been a 5+year issue.

Not all the Council agree with the direction the City is going in and often vote against the majority voting block. However it comes down to a three to two vote. Citizens are going to be stuck with policies enacted by those who seek higher office or who are there for the benefits associated with their positions. We need effective leaders, representatives who care about Antioch and without selfish interests. FOOS

Hans,you are absolutely right. The problem in Antioch is our town has become a community with a significant population of renters. Now that's not a bad thing but renters generally don't have vested interest in their communities. The Antioch of 25 to 30 years ago would never put up with this or a Council that turns a deaf ear to problems. That's when we had effective leadership. FOOS

So how can we change this? What I know is that, one will hsve a vedted interest in oned community when you identify oneself with this community. Owning a house in Antioch is impossible for midden and low income. The cost of building a house is ridiculously high. The sewer and utilities hook up are way too costly. Are we really looking for gentrification?
The fact that we have no plan inplace for all the homeless is a major problem. How can we be proud when a sign above the road is the only thing. Perhaps creating a code that properties in our downtown can only be occupied by owners? Or proper penalties for problem renters and owners. Like on the corner of J and 3rd.
