New Haven Regional Water Authority acknowledges a discoloration and high level of minerals in our water for last few days/ weeks. They have given me several reasons for this- firefighters, holiday, street sweeping. They have yet to put a statement on their site about how to fix this- reduce usage, do not run water- or alert the city to make a statement. They state the water is SAFE except for: (from site)
"Is Temporarily Discolored Water Harmful to Drink?
Some people may be more vulnerable to substances in drinking water than the general population. Those people who are immuno-compromised, such as people with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, those who have undergone organ transplants, have HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care providers about drinking water that is discolored. It is a personal choice whether or not to use the discolored water. If you choose to drink it, fill a container, put it in your refrigerator to chill and let the minerals settle to the bottom. When ready to drink, use the clear water from the top of the container. "
This statement makes it clear to me that this is NOT good water to drink over several days or weeks, which is how long the discoloration has continued. Please call them to complain: the city needs to step up here. 203-562-4020

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing temporarily discoloration in your water. We are aware that some of our customers are experiencing discolored water from this week’s heat wave that has resulted in high demand for water, and we are actively working to remedy the situation.
Water discoloration is caused by naturally occurring minerals in the water that settle to the bottom of water mains. When the flow of water in the mains significantly increases, it can stir up the minerals and carry them with the water, causing discoloration.
We recommend that people avoid drinking the water, showering or doing laundry until the water clears. If your water is slightly discolored, run a cold water faucet located at the highest point in your home, such as a second floor bathtub, for five to 10 minutes to clear out internal plumbing. If your water remains discolored, contact the RWA at 203-562-4020 or email ask.info@rwater.com.
