sadly, there are 2 other identical issues, which means that this is a serious issue. from the city's perspective, the problem is the inclined grade coming up whitney ave. this would include then a pedestrian signal, which apparently the city isn't interested in doing. during phase IV of the farmington canal, there is no money or treatment being allocated to fixing the grade of the whitney avenue bridge (which causes the incline)

I agree that there should be a crosswalk with a signal on demand, but for now - there are crosswalks both at Grove and Trumbull Streets if you want to cross Whitney Ave.

comments like this last one (no offense citizen) are why we still don't have walkable shopping districts and will (if thoughts do not change) continue to fail at attracting shoppers to our retail districts

No discernable action is being taken on this issue. Please do something before this dangerous intersection gets someone seriously hurt, or worse.

Everyone please to call your Alderperson, plus the city's engineering / traffic departments, and note this is an issue.

Despite numerous postings on SeeClickFix with dozens of votes, the word has not gotten through to anyone at City Hall that anyone cares about this intersection, at all. We have gone to several in person meetings there recently but they need to hear from more than a couple people on this.

It's great to vote on this site, but if more than two or three people don't go in person to City Hall and explain the nature of the problem here (or at least make a phone call or send an email about it), it is unlikely to be taken seriously. One phone call can make a huge difference.

Is there a safer place within a block to add a crosswalk?

Looks like someone painted one.

They are coming to powerwash it tonight since they are worried about safety and liability. Might need to reopen :(

Keep the issue open. There should be an xwalk here as well as at several other locations along the stretch between Trumbull and Grove.

Also, the director of one of the city's largest business districts wrote this note to me, after we discussed the most pressing pedestrian issues in New Haven:

"I think the intersection of Audubon at Whitney ought to be focused on. I understand it is a challenging place to put a crosswalk because of the rise in the roadway (the same factor that makes it dangerous to cross here) , but I'm also sure there is some creative solution that can be devised. There is a broad swath of the community that crosses Whitney at Audubon - Yale folks, workers and shoppers in the neighborhood, ECA students, NMS students, families with young children, and more - and it is currently unnecessarily dangerous for all of them. Let's work on fixing this BEFORE someone really gets hurt or worse."

There is no question that we need a crosswalk at Whitney and Audubon. The issue of safety, given the rise in Whitney Ave. seems to be the major obstacle. A similar problem exists on Tower Parkway, with a stoplight in front of the Yale gym being concealed by a curve in the road. This has been solved with a flashing red light indicating a stop ahead, whenever the stoplight goes red. Perhaps a similar fix would help the Audubon/Whitney intersection. Then perhaps we could have a stoplight, instead of just a crosswalk.

Work seems to have started, but not soon enough unfortunately. A pedestrian was hit today at this intersection. I hope there will be results before we have another accident!

An update from City Hall:

The Engineering Department has a surveyor preparing the topographical and right-a-way survey of the area so that proper Complete Streets methods can be designed and applied. A consultant team will propose Complete Streets design solutions and then the TT&P/Engineering departments will work on the budget of the project and timing.

The main reason for the project being started in a few months is due to the large sewer project by the WPCA. The road has been ripped up many times in the past month. That project is ongoing and will last through 2013 - though the area around this intersection will likely be completed much earlier.

Has this been addressed? At least 100 people have voted on this or the related issues around it.

It has not yet been fixed permanently, but I have been told that the City is working on a solution in conjunction with other construction projects going on in the area. Fingers crossed!

I hope this will be addressed soon!

I heard from the GNHWPCA that this is in the works after the Spring thaw, but I haven't seen or heard of plans from TT&P.
