Public Works advised they will begin a signal study for these locations. It will take approximately 60 business days.

Thank you! No one at our Meredith Woods HOA meeting last week could recall a recent study.

There is consistent illegal and very dangerous use of the turn lane at Lake Boone Trail and Landmark Drive, as traffic turns left off of Landmark Drive to travel east on Lake Boone Trail toward I-440. If a traffic light is place, it should include a left hand signal. If not, there should be a curb placed on Landmark Drive to prevent left turns, limiting access out onto Lake Boone Trail to westbound only. Since Ed Drive has been connected to landmark Drive, this has become a very unsafe traffic pattern. Occasional moving violations monitoring has failed to effect any change in driving behaviors.

Many neighbors noticed that car counting cables were in place for about 24 hours at the exit of Nancy Ann onto Lake Boone, on traffic lanes on Lake Boone approaching Nancy Ann, and at the end of Harden exiting onto Blue Ridge. Although a limited view of our three entrance/exit intersections, we hope it will provide valuable data.
If a full traffic study is done, they should note:
1) Intersection with Harden/Blue Ridge/SECU driveway--very difficult lines of sight from Blue Ridge traveling S and attempting turn onto Harden, and exiting Harden and attempting (an almost impossible) left turn onto Blue Ridge. Cars traveling from the SECU exit often try to turn left onto Blue Ridge or even drive straight through four lanes. Many vehicles going straight or turning in that intersection often use the tactic of just pulling into traffic and making the flow of traffic stop. There is no place to sit in the middle. With a 45 mph speed limit, it's a dangerous proposition to do anything other than turn right, then do a u-turn at the Lake Boone Trail stop light. Further, the painted lines on Harden are virtually invisible now.
2) Intersection at Nancy Ann/Lake Boone/Landmark--we've heard of and seen a number of accidents. Those attempting left turns from Landmark or Nancy Ann onto LBT often pull on out and get into the center lanes--which are actually reserved for turning people on LBT. I see it happen every single day. There are no medians so it is difficult for turning traffic to see the lanes.
3) Myron at Lake Boone Trail--residents and businesses exiting may not exit left and must yield to oncoming traffic moving in three lanes AND u-turning traffic. The u-turning traffic does not seem to be aware of traffic exiting Meredith Woods, do very long, slow, wide u-turns. If several cars are queued up to make u-turns, then traffic in the flow lane on LBT backs up past the stoplight and traffic trying to exit Myron just doesn't have an opportunity, there is no break in the traffic.
A lot of traffic at all three intersections is "visiting" and not familiar with the traffic patterns--people at the hospital, various medical offices, and other businesses.
I hope our neighborhood will be able to review the comprehensive report of these three intersections when that is complete. Thank you.

The City of Raleigh Board of Adjustment just approved a special permit for a private school of 250 students (plus staff) to build a new school on Harden Road. That will add to the weekday level of traffic entering and exiting our neighborhood. This past week there was another bad accident at Nancy Ann and Lake Boone Trail. Hope accident records are included in the report. Thank you.

Public Works has provided this information on item 3) listed above: Lake Boone and Myron is located between two intersections that are only 850’ apart. NCDOT standard is 1200’ apart. There has been 1 angle type crash at this location within the most recent 12 month study period. It is not recommended at this time to install a traffic signal. The City will continue to monitor this location and make improvements as needed.

Could you at least allow Myron exiting cars turning right (the only option) have the right-of-way after oncoming traffic--preference over those dangerous u-turners? It is our main entrance.

We have received the signal study back from review. At this time, Blue Ridge and Harden Road is not recommended for signalization. Staff will continue to monitor this location. Thank you for your concern with the safe and efficient movement of traffic.

OK, we would like to receive a copy of the study. Our neighborhood is having another meeting about Harden traffic on August 25th. Also, two items remain from the initial request: 1) the Nancy Ann and Lake Boone Trail intersection is a huge problem and has not been addressed yet. 2) the issue of having to yield to too many u-turners at Myron and Lake Boone Trail (as we attempt to depart our neighborhood at Myron). Last night I witnessed four cars driving down Lake Boone Trail from Ridge Road, and since the left turn light to get onto the beltline traveling south wasn't to their advantage, they each continued a bit and made a u-turn at Myron and then proceeded to get on the beltline from that direction, really backing up traffic because it takes them longer to make this u-turn than it takes to just make a left-hand turn--they have to wait for a larger break in on-coming traffic. Meanwhile, traffic exiting Myron (right-hand turn) has to wait for all of the u-turners. Recommend eliminating all u-turns there, requiring them to make a regular left-hand turn, go up a few feet to the turn-around, and then back out.

This post is getting old, but as a driver who often makes the left from Blue Ridge to Lake Boone, a couple of things would really help with traffic.
1) Make the left turn light longer so that all of the people in the left turn lane can clear the intersection
2) At low traffic times (e.g., Sunday mornings, late evenings), make the left turn arrow "trip" when someone wants to turn and there is no oncoming traffic.
3) Allow unprotected left turns (blinking yellow arrow?) all the time or at least at certain times of day when people are waiting to turn left and there is no oncoming traffic. Could be solved with the trip light as well.
These three things would probably keep people from going through the neighborhoods and solve the other problems in this discussion stream

What rocket scientist neglected to draw the line extending Lake Boone Trail to Edwards Mill?

The timings for the left turn off Blue Ridge onto Lake Boone were increased and are being monitored by the City of Raleigh’s traffic cameras.

The flashing yellow arrow was being installed at Macon Pone not Lake Boone. The flashing yellow arrow for Lake Boone is yet to be determined.

The intersection stays in coordination plans Monday through Saturday until 10:00 pm and that is when it goes into free run and will work on demand until 6:00 am.

On Sunday’s it stays in free run until 11:00 am and then in coordination. The coordination for the rest of the day has a cycle length of 140 second throughout the day till 10:00 pm.
The intersection stays in coordination due to the amount of traffic on the corridor.

Blue Ridge and Harden was studied and reviewed by the City of Raleigh’s Senior Transportation Engineer and signalization is not recommended. This was posted in the See click fix forum on 8/7/13.
Lake Boone and Nancy Ann/ Landmark are in the queue to be studied along with the others and shall be reviewed. It was on hold due to upcoming construction in the area that might help resolve the issue but the City has learned recently it would not. We will be continuing to work this issue and will continuously monitor for improvements.

When does Lake Boone get connected with Edwards Mill? That would solve about 3/4 of this trouble.

When the adjacent property is developed, the road will be extended. There is no current project on the Capital Improvement Program to make this extension.
