The owners of 436-438 Georgia have had their property tax basis adjusted down to $350K from the $2.6mm that they paid for the building through a trustee's deed. You can look this value up on the assessor's web site. Parcel # is 0056-193-100.
The $350K number might still be high. They've stopped contributing meaningfully to the property tax base.
Furthermore, this building also poses a liability to the public in the event of another earthquake. If it wasn't safe in the last one, it sure isn't safe now that most of the front has peeled off.
Put it up for sale for the appraised tax basis. Presumably the owner had to argue that was the fair value for the lower re-assessment. Or repair the building.
