i hear you, u know its sad that i call the police because about 10 males gather in front of my house at 1am being loud, pumping the music and they come and just park along side dont bother to say to anyone hey if u dont live here get moving or just plain go the heck home cuz this isnt a club. they just sit tight watch them and leave. thats just one instance of the many, im sick of this too. if i call becuz they are hanging out and smoking weed, same result thats if they ever show up. this is a very diverse area mostly hispanics and i dont want to say is just one group its everyone, black, white, mexicans, puertoricans that have this behavior in fair haven and the hillside. i am puertorican and a home owner and will never lower to act in such a way or disrespect anyones neighborhood or property. i will like that i call the police even for the simplest thing and got the same result and respect as if i lived on townsend avenue. we pay high enough taxes here those of us that choose to still own and live in this neighborhood. i have to pack up my kids bikes to take them riding at the park becuz of the fear that some maniac comes racing down the street and ends up hurting a child on the sidewalk. its just amazing

I live on Atwater st and these guy use the street as there own race track. I have called the Police so many time and if they do show up these guys are long gone.

I got a response the FIRST time I mentioned the cars speeding and doing burnouts from Alderman Rodriguez who is responsible for this area. He seems to know about the speeding between Clinton & Ferry on Dover but does not acknowledge comments directed toward burnouts and speeding for show that occur. I correct myself: that flashing speed limit sign was put on the street which may get the attention of some, but I'm sure the people we're talking about laugh at it. I also wrote a personal letter to Lt. Luiz Casanova of the Fair Haven substation about the same thing. In that letter I mentioned that unless they use unmarked vehicles and have them sit on the street, they will not catch anybody. It's a joke when a regular cop car drives through because obviously everybody sees it, right? Again, it's up to the City to enforce traffic, littering, loitering, whatever violations - you or me cannot issue tickets, we can just complain. It is easier for them to take the attitude we WANT things this way. I assure you, if this crap happened on Townsend Ave. they'd be all over it. "Liveable City Initiative" should be renamed "Live and Let Live Initiative" LOL

They do not care about quality of life issues, such as these.

They care about getting their votes and looking good to voters.

If they really wanted these cars to stop with the noise and speeding and etc... They would put a stop to it!

The scary thing is that over half these people with the loud cars, loud bikes and the cars racing, have drugs and are involved with the drug dealings and shootings on our streets. This is not news to the police, they know this. Possibly news to Alderman Rodriguez.

I propose that we set up a Dunken Donuts on each street and this will attract more police to the area, for crying out lound the DD on Grand and Ferry is only open till 10pm.

Or maybe next time you see a cop (I know it will be a long time) you should brew a cup of coffee and offer to drive out to the DD on Foxxen BLVD for the officer. No doubt about it there are 3 DD's on a stretch of two miles over there and you see no one speeds there.

PS To the people who responded to Maria's original comment: IF NHPD is really clueless where the problem starts with the speeding-burning out cars, I could point in the general direction of somewhere between Peck & Dover streets, possibly on Rowe St, most likely on the western side of the street. Get it? That's what I see ALL DAY LONG... Are they afraid they will be accused of PROFILING? Probably, but it's not an excuse when it comes to PUBLIC SAFETY.

They are not PUBLIC SAFETY officers, they are PULIC TAX PAYER RIP OFF OFFICERS, they are not only taking our hard earned tax money, but they are eating our donuts and drinking our coffee at Dunkin Donuts, this is taking up our time cause there is never any coffee left when the public comes to DD and it makes us have to wait for new coffee to be brewed.

No doubt Afraid of Police. I'm not naive to the fact they would put a stop to these things if they wanted to. But if they think people living here don't care it absolutely makes it worse. It comes down to this for me: I didn't buy here so I loose money and/or I don't feel like living here because of these problems. Truth be known, I would like to see whoever is causing the problems OUT OF HERE. Short of spending tons of money to buy surplus property and putting people I like in them, not sure how to do it yet.

This happened to me just yesterday with the donuts. On Ferry, I wanted one of those jelly sticks and they were gone. Now I know why. Did you see? Fish heads and fish guts on Grand Ave. I want names damnit!

I am telling you they are eating up all our donuts. We might need to set up a citizen operation one day and buy all the donuts from DD early one morning and we can resell them by where all the drug dealers and these loud cars are, and it will attract the police.

to add to someones comment about the alderman well the issue with him not addressing the burn out problem is because he is buddys with many of the people causing the issue. about casanova, ive tried several times to call his cellphone when the action is goin on and the voicemail is full. yesterday for the first time ever i saw police result and that only because someone calld that a car was gonna get sideswiped and the car was still parkd and still hot when they showed up. thanks god for this one because i had been truly the only time we see any results on this matter. hopefully having the car towed on record when we call we will see more results. please neighbors keep calling, we need to see results. today the neighborhood was quieter than other weekends and less hang out on some of the corners.

Wait til the next time the AH in the white Nissan Sentra 2-door with the black primer hood comes flying down the street and I accidently back out of my driveway at the same time. The only way NHPD will do something about these guys on our street is after some one is killed. Then NHPD will show up for about a week and then disappear again.

I have also seen the red honda civic hatch speeding, blowing thru the stop sign at Atwater and Graffton st many times and have never been able to get his plate number. This guys is going to kill some one some day.

Our Alderman 14-D Stephanie Bauer and 15-D Joseph Rodriguez and Lt. Casanova have all been inaffective in helping our community in helping us with these problems.

Maybe some one could set up a meeting with all there and we could all show up to voice our concers. It is time that well all band togetter and take back our streets one block at a time.

...Maria: Just read your comments to John Doe. I called the cops 2x yesterday about the white Nissan w/black hood. Didn't see one cop car though. You mentioned a white rx7. I know of two red ones, almost identical, both flying down the street and burning rubber constantly. One has those white historical license plates. I'm still amazed how old these guys are. Are they going to be doing this when they're 70 and 80 y/o too?? LOL Let's get together; it's only going to get worse as we get into summer. Not to mention after the Puerto Rican Day parade in Sept. I moved here in mid-October last year so I either I didn't notice the blocked-off street or I missed the memorial 'festivities' altogether. I WAS here on a Sunday in Sept though for the aftermath of the PR Day parade in New Haven, though. Even in NYC where the cops basically let you get away with anything & everything, they would have squashed that mess in 2 seconds flat! NHPD needs to take a page from the NYPD book on that one. It would make me happy to see NHPD respond swiftly and harshly to everything we're talking about here is what I'm saying. There is illegal dumping all over Fair Haven streets / property and others who are content to be a disruptive force. We combat the "negative forces" with positive action. Community Service, Youth Programs, Neighbors taking care of other Neighbors etc. We want to encorage CSNA membership involvement in the many activities of CSNA and partner organizations who are promoting events focused on creating POSITIVE change in Fair Haven.

We posted a tree-planting event on the CSNA calendar + announcend the dates for the Grafton / Ferry Block Party (August 21). In addition, CD Team + Ferry Stree Block Watch is actively cleaning up the streets and talking with neighbors on the 1 and 3 Saturdays of each month from 10 am to 11 am starting at 167 Grafton Street. Just a little warning to everyone, I found out from someone I know that these thugs that think it is cool to tear up our streets with loud cars, peal outs, loud music and of course shootings, have been watching these boards and are intrested in retaliating aginst the people complaining.

yes, complaining and doing are 2 different things. For me, it's about money. In the end, all I really want is for my street to be "nice" like those getting closer to the water. I'm well aware this isn't Darien or Westport and never will be, just decent working-class area where normal people will see a "for sale" sign on a house and actually buy it. Dover Street has a number of residents who are active and work closely with me. Folks who take the time to pick up around the street if they notice trash, folks who do not hesitate to contact the NHPD if there is an issue. Folks who demanded a stop sign at Atwater and Dover and received it. Its that sense of "ownership" of your community. Unfortunately that sense of ownership is not how everyone feels. By all means.. I am not saying "maria" is one I am simply stating what I see on Dover Street. A sense of working together to accomplish goals. I am not perfect nor is anyone else. But when I ask people to work with me to accomplish something I truly mean it. We need more people to take action. Again, I am willing to do all I can do to help. God knows us alders don't receive 60,00-90,000 annually like some city employees do. We receive an annual check for 2,000 roughly. We do this because we truly want to help..

I'm not a member of the Chantham square group but I did attend a couple of meetings a few years ago at Mary Wade. I personal found the group very clicky. The spent most of the time i was there at that meeting picking out sticker styles for people to put on there front doors and planning there annually party in Chantham square park. I brought up the subject of the noise and raceing and was told that would come at the end of the meeting. I didn't feel that they had there periorities right and left and never went back.

So your reading of the minutes seems about what my experience was with the Chantham square group. I'm not knocking the group in any way, it seems we have bigger problems then what they have set there eyes on.

With all do respect I do take it personally. I took it personally when you chose to steer away from the matters at hand which are speeding and other quality of life concerns in the Dover and Atwater area and chose to attack me personally for a personal issue which occurred with me last year. Am I proud of it? Of course not and I have apologized and had my day in court as ANYONE would of.

Furthermore, to suggest that the reason I granted the request of an Atwater street closure because of "friends" is bogus. Now if your frustrated I can understand but please don't throw mud if you do not ALL the facts. For one the family which you are referring to are NOT personal friends. In fact they voted for Ms. Reyes over me when I ran for Democratic Co-Chair. (A FACT) The same to me because I am the alder in the area requesting street closure for a memorial which was planned for a young man who passed. That's how it was presented... (believe it or not that's on you) NOW those who know the process in shutting down a street will know its a $50 fee one pays and the applicant must go through a few steps such as; obtaining over 50% of residents in that area to approve, having a letter from the police department approving, and letter from the alder. WELL OVER 50% of the residents on between Atwater and Lombard and Atwater and Chatham approved. (all that is necessary) It was because of the letter of support from the police, because of over 50% of neighbors I approved the request. Now did I like what occurred after? Of course not because it was NOT what was presented and plenty of folks called to complain to ensure it does not happen again. I can tell you in all honestly if the request is asked for this year it will not be as easy and I hope people like you who had concern and sit with me and explain to those who want the closure WHY.

Again, I understand the frustration because god knows I have had my share of criticisms with downtown and the way departments operate however lets not make assumptions and "spread" rumors because what you suggest isn't true. Lets continue to work, lets make a difference, because I know as you know there are strength in numbers and if we want downtown to listen we need to strand side by side and voice our concerns and not tussle with one another in our neighborhood. I can not disagree with your experience, all I can tell you is that research on urban neighborhoods and violent crime finds that:
neighbors acting collectively, in each others interest reduces violent crime in a neighborhood. The research also finds that when residents know the names of the children in the neighborhood it is a predictor of reduced violent crime. There is nothing magical about knowing the names of the children, it has to do with people in the neighborhood knowing each other. In addition to the research, just ask you self, does this not make sense?

I would like to see a breakdown of traffic enforcement activity by neighborhood so individual neighborhoods can actively measure what is happening there.

In 2008, over 2,000 neighbors plus nearly 100 elected officials, community groups, businesses and churches directly requested this through the Safe Streets Petition, but no action has been taken.

As we all know, there has been a major citywide increase in M/V ticketing since 2008 -- but since little neighborhood data has been compiled, it is difficult to see if that increase was just in downtown or if the NHPD is actually enforcing the laws in any particular section of town.

Yes, that is a helpful site, but it does not break it down by type of violation (e.g., a missing license is treated the same as a speeding or red light ticket) or calculate in a standard way by policing district/neighborhood - so not particularly useful for neighborhoods trying to monitor the effectiveness of their government.

My point has nothing to do with Chatham Square group meetings. This is why I respectfully request again that you read the article that I sent you, and the study if you are so inclined. If you believe in evidence based research and you find this study convincing I may be able to help you. If you do not believe that research in general or that this study in particular has validity then I do not want to waste your time, or mine. As your neighbor I respect your choice to act in what you believe to be your best interest. My assumption is that you are as busy as I am and therefore I do not want to waste your time on things that you do not believe will work or that you believe will not make a difference.

A comment on moving violations issued in Fair Haven regardless of how it's broken down by NHI or not:

I drove on Atwater yesterday from Grand to Dover. Do it yourself and open your eyes. At literally EVERY intersection there are dozens of burnt rubber marks. Undeniable EVIDENCE enforcement IS NOT taking place. NHPD: I want an answer as to why flagrant violations are permitted. Do those commiting the acts have some sort of diplomatic immunity?? If not, then get tough and start towing cars! Can't catch them? Then use unmarked police vehicles and park your a** on the street for an hour or two. You will.

i did the same thing today and anyone can visibly see there is a problem. the marked car idea makes lots of sense but how much is the NHPD willing to invest on us complaining about this. hopefully b4 anyone gets seriously hurt like the child on the corner of chatham park a few yrs ago.

@alderman u made a few good points and i understand. hablando se entiende la gente and i am glad u cleared up a few rumors. anyhow i will like to know if in fact these people try the block memorial again how do we go about to ensure they have a cop present? i signed a petition last year yes and i was told it was a progression and that the mayor will b present to speak on channel 8 so the police find the killer. they sure got me that time. i came home to the biggers chaos in the world so again, any steps we can take to ensure if they do get this approved that an officer is mandatory?

If and when they do ask for my permission I will ENSURE a police is present. I will also go into detail about our concerns.

I'm going to print all these 65 comments for this thing tomorrow. I get worked up every time I look at the comments. I guess the police are not responsible for every issue on here but they are for this one! No way is this problem up to the Ald., LCI rep., or anybody BUT the police to fix. They cannot be given one inch of room from us. That's how it works and how they will weasle they're way off the hook if we let them. It's really galling that somebody can show a VIDEO to the highest cop we deal with and there's peel out marks all over the road and yet it like it didn't happen. They must take us for fools. PS if anybody wants to talk in the parking lot b4, I drive a lime green windstar with orange hubcaps and a plastic german shepard attached to the roof. I don't like attracting attention to myself.

wow, i have lived on atwater and chatham for 12yrs and the last few yrs this problem has increased more and more. i wrote here a few months ago but no difference. i agree with everyone on everything. i hear from people "well, what do you expect its fair haven" thats not right, fair haven is beautiful, full of diversity. we have a little bit of everything here and are close to everything. it would be a wonderful place to live if NHPD took our quality of life more serious, from prostitution, noise reduction, traffic enforcement, loitering ect. we do pay the highest taxes and we should get the most out of our police, you see them just drive by ignoring many things that in other cities or sections arent overlooked. i will attend this meeting today hoping that the group that gathers can make sense of things and work together. i am raising children on this street that at times look out the window and ask why do those people just hang out all day? dont they have family? dont they go to school or work? they hear the burn outs constantly and tell me i dont want to live here those people are crazy they can crash into our house. As a working mother and taxpayer i want the best for my children and to set a good example and values and its sad that lots of people around here dont aspire more for their families.

You know Anaika, it just seemed way to "convenient" to mention on the eve of this meeting, but last night around 6 two cars actually had a freaking drag race (side-by-side!) from Atwater to Ferry. What really got to me was not so much the car coming in the other direction that had to pull over, but more this kid about 14 on in-line skates I saw not 5 min later. I don't think these guys with the cars don't care - but more that nothing will bad will happen and they won't crash. Anybody past like 30-40 knows from experience you can't assume and bad things DO happen. If nothing else NHPD needs to step up not only to protect kids in the street but also protect these guys from their own stupidity and lack of maturity. I don't care if alot of them are like 40 - just means they don't "get it" yet.

I will be at the meeting tonight and it is my birthday, what a way to celebrate my day.

I have been reading this forum and I think it is past time for everyone to step up to the plate and demand that action be taken.

Over a half year ago I talked with Alderman Rodriguez about these very same issues. It would be unfair to say that "nothing" has been done, but I should say "not enough" has been done to stop these issues.

Alderman Rodriguez said the Capitan will be there, would it be possible to have the Chief of Police there as well?

These are very serious issues and need to be dealt with as such.

Issues I will bring up:

1. Speeding cars throughout the whole neighborhood

2. Cars using streets such as Bright Street as thruways

3. ATV's, Dirt Bikes and other non-registered vehicles

4. Stop signs being blown on just about every street

5. Drugs and Prostitution

6. Cars using their horns as door bells

7. Possibility of citizens allowing police to use their drive way to "hide" from speeders, as to be able to catch these speeders, people will slow down when they see a police car and therefore will not be impacted by a police officer sitting in plane sight.

8. Instillation of the rubber removable speed bumps for Bright street.

Suggestions:
1. Beat Officers hang out with drug dealers. Take beat officers and put them where the drug dealers are. This will keep the dealers moving and buyers not knowing where to buy and/or not trusting the dealer because police are around him/her a lot.

2. At least 2-3 times a week, having a random check point on Grand Ave., Ferry Street and streets that are known for Thur-traffic.

3. Vigorous traffic enforcement on Grand Ave, tackling "small" issues such as cars double parked, excess horn honking, loud mufflers, loud music.

4. Reverse prostitution stings on Grand and Ferry

Questions:

1. What can we do as residents to assist the police? Possibly taking down licensee plates and vehicle descriptions? How will this information be used by the police and will our local police take an active stance in investigating these vehicles, such as pulling them over for minor violations.

2. How many police are allocated to our neighborhood and are these officers assigned to taking active calls of service or are they assigned to patrol the neighborhood?

3. Is there a possible way to get quick access to community police officers? Such as being able to contact then them on a cell phone? This would give me greater peace of mind, as I know by calling the normal phone number would have any random police officer come and many of the police officers do not care about this community, they seem to care more about getting their pay checks and calling it a day.

4. These issues have been issues for years, what has been the major hold up in resolving these issues?

The Chief will not be able to attend tonight's event because of the late notice. He did however attend last month's meeting and discussed some of what he was working on. I am sure we can have him return at a future meeting because again, the management team meets the 1st Thurs of every month at 6 PM at the substation.

I am confident though with LT. Casanova and the Captain in charge of our Patrol Unit they will be able to address some of your concerns and report on what has been done.

J Lopez you know the games they play here with the cars. I see it all the time. Cop drives by, 5 minutes later somebody's out there powerbraking their car and I have to eat burnt rubber as an appetizer before dinner. I assume they watch for cops and act accordingly as you say. If they aren't able to combat these problems for whatever staffing reason then they probably need to bring in a special task force to combat the drugs/prostitution/reckless driving (speeding is the least of ot). And they can't be recognizable to the average street savvy person in Fair Haven - a no brainer to me. I see some putting a bit of soft-spin on these issues. I understand we can't go ballistic on them, but it has to be communicated in no uncertain terms we want decisive, immediate and drastic measures taken. It's the way I feel anyway.

These are many of the same issues that I asked Alderman Rodriguez to bring up on my behalf, as I won't be able to make the meeting tonight due to a scheduling conflict. Thank you, Joe, for getting back to me so quickly and for being so involved.

I think it is important to recognize that we, as members of the Fair Haven community, must be a part of the change we would like to see and be willing to work together to build and nurture the community that we want.

So, to those of you who are willing to step up to plate, thank you! Action speaks much louder than words, and, as Lee, Alderman Rodriguez, and others have brought up, there are many groups right here in our community that people could become involved in to be a part of the change and positive vibe that exists here in Fair Haven! Take part! :)

One thing that I hope someone brings up tonight is the "anti-snitch" policy that these kids have. I have been the target of retaliation due to posting here and I am very afraid to give my identity and afraid to go to such a community meeting where there is a possibility of these kids showing up to figure out who is "snitching" on them.

Do you think you can bring this issue up and maybe report back to us on this board as far as what the police leaders say in reference to this.

u have every reason to be concerned. when we first moved here we were labeled the complainers by our neighbors because or they were constantly working on rotaries on their driveway and out front. i mean i couldnt open a window to get fresh air because the eshaust smell or the smell of weed as they hung out and community leaders or police never saw an issue. has something changed over the yrs no. i have had dog poop placed on my door mat and on the door lock, and they would tell people that they new the noise bothered us so they will do it even worst because we complained. Ghetto mentally and lack of respect. i have no issues with changing your oil or a tire but working on rotaries and racecars a foot away its a safety hazards and let alone the noise but the owners/parents allow it and see nothing wrong with the crowds that it brings and see nothing wrong with spilling over and hanging on my fence all day long. they know it bothers people but dont care, just smile at you and keep it moving like its normal because this is fair haven and they can make all the noise they want.

In terms of a community meeting why even "snitch" on anybody specific? Just tell the police how we want it handled from this day forward. Then if somebody gets caught it's not like they weren't warned.

The act of going and talking to the police is considered snitching, according to these ghetto kids. Even though you are not pin pointing aone person you are considered to be snitching on a "group" and sometimes that can even be worse then "snitching" on one person.

the meeting was informative i did get upset when casanova said it was impossible that his mailbox can be full at anytime. im 34yrs old not a child dont need to make up lies. i even told the dispatcher if there was anyway or any other number because that one was full. so still a certain few agreed with him that they have never had that problem. that was upsetting also that my question was never answerd about maybe getting together with the unit incharge dirrectly to give them heads up on on certain issues. im not worried being labeled a snitch or being scared. if i see people on my fence or smoking weed i call their attention but most dont care, i dont bother calling police because according to them thats not a priority but if i call for the same issue at my moms house on townsend it is taken seriously, why is that? what are the loitering laws around here and how is it enforced?

Just my thoughts. I just got back from the meeting at the Police sub-station tonight. I walked away very disappointed. Lt. Casanova wants us to all know crime is down and he is doing his best with the 20 officers he has for our area. He say M/V violations are up 130% but didn't break it down to how many of those were speeding or running stop sign violations.

Alderman Joseph Rodriguez was there and I belive he wants to help us with these issues. But I think his hands might be just as tied as ours are in resolving the problems.

Just my impression but the woman (sorry forgot her name) running the meeting just wanted to get thru the agenda and get out of there. I would think she would be happy with people showing up and looking to speak to improve our community.

To Alderman Joseph Rodriguez maybe you could set up a meeting sometime soon and Invite Stephanie Bauer, Lt. Casanova and maybe some people from downtown and the Chief. So we can really discuss the issues that many of us tonight want to talk about. I feel as I walk away with no aswears tonight.

Sure we were all told to keep showing up for the monthly meeting. But if showing up doesn't change anything then it's just a wast of our time.

I notice that you question was never answeared tonight. One of the few backing Lt Casanova by saying she never had that problem is from Mary Wade Home and she is very much a friend of the LT. So dont walk away felling like it was you because there is a click there.

I am going to contact the Lt. again to ensure the traffic unit comes back out to fair haven and target Atwater, Rowe, and Dover specifically.

Would anyone be interested in establishing a Dover/Rowe Street block watch? Therefor we can monthly or bi-monthly and discuss concerns related to the block compared to community wide? I will be willing to help organize.

First off the meeting should last as long as it takes for the "community" to bring out the issues they want. It is a meeting held only once a month and to give us a half hour to talk dose not do us any justice.

2nd numbers are only as good as they are reported the previous year and also accurate documentation by the police officer called to the sceen. Documenting a robbery as traffic violation would indeed bring your robbery statistic down and your traffic rate up. Of course I am not saying that this is being done, but the LT was really quick to focus on numbers and not actual current problems, however we should all give him a pat on the back for that one.

The LT took my comment very personal. However my comment was not meant to be personal, but in thinking about it again it should be taken personal. He is the supervisor for the district and if his officers fail, he fails. His officers and the end result of crime on our streets is a direct resemblance of him due to his position.

As far as Ms. Lopez goes, she is advocating that the result of attempting to pull these people over results in them running away from the police. My response is, if this is the case (which I do not think it is), then we have a serious respect for the police issue. Not everyone is going to run from the police and the possibility of someone running from the police should not be a reason not to actively go after these people.

I also take issue with the fact that Mr. Alderman Rodriguez told us the Capitan would be there tonight. She/He was not there.

Possibly next month the LT might be able to provide us with month to month statistics, lets see how May compared with June.

As far as your question John Doe about what type of traffic violations, I think what the LT was trying to explain is that it dose not matter what you are pulled over for, the fact that you are pulled over gives the police probable cause to investigate you, such as finding out if you are wanted, smelling the weed you might have in your car or seeing the gun that is on your back seat. This reduces crime. This is why I said I was very happy to see the cop pull me to the side over my front licenses plate, he was able to run my name through the computer to find out that I did not have warrants, he was able to smell my breath for alcohol to determine that I was not drinking and he was able to see that the inside of my car did not look like your average drug users car. I am assuming most people in these stops get off with a warning and they are able to find the bad guys quickly.

We will have to be ready for our half hour of being able to talk to the LT next month. Meanwhile I am going to see if I can suggest that they not have a time limit. Weekly city hall meetings do not have a time limit, our monthly community meetings should not have a time limit.

Before I start getting spammed for straight forward deminer, I have to let everyone know. I do not play in local politics, I am not here to make anyone in office happy or to put on a different face to the community. I came to the meeting to attempt to get results and if all I walked away with tonight is being able to have Ms. Lopez write a letter to the church to have them clean, then I think I might have made a little dent.

I notice the LT did not make any promises tonight, however he stated that he learned new things tonight about the community. However I still stand by my observance, if there can be a car with loud music and a loud muffler right outside the police substation that the LT runs, then these people know the police do not take these matters seriously. That is why I was telling him that these thugs are laughing right in his face, which he took objection to.

Sorry I staid quiet when you brought up the fact that his voice mail is always filled. Yes I have called that number and have gotten a full voice mail. However he has two phone numbers, if you call the front desk to the police station they will give you both his office number and cell phone number.

Although I do have to give credit to him, he was on personal vacation when I was trying to call and the box was full. But as he explained it takes a while to get back to you and he goes down the list in order.

This is why I asked if we could contact the officers directly, which he seemed to have gotten upset about. But I fully understand his position about the dispatch system...I guess second topic that needs to be brought up are police officers that do not want to do anything and could careless about the community, they come to work for a pay check. (Ohhh police officers reading this, please understand that I am not talking about "all" of you, I am talking about the 10%-20% of you.)

While I am on this subject here...how can we expect two police officers to run Fair Haven, answers the calls of the 23,000 residents that LT is responsible for and also do community policing? I have the feeling it is impossible, so the question I raise is:

Is there really community policing in this neighborhood? If one of the two police officers happen to be sick or even both of them, it is great they can pull a police officer from another section, but that officer dose not know the issues or people in this community. It is not "real" community policing.

BTW: After my two postings and my comments at the meeting I can guess how many police cars will be on my street now..... Zero, and probably 2 behind me every time I drive down Grand Ave. and if you think my speedometer is ever going to go over 20 MPH, you are crazy.

The meeting went pretty much like I thought it would. I wish Lt. Casanova had stated those statistics in whole numbers ie: in 2008 we pulled over 1 car in Fair Haven for a traffic infraction. In 2009, we pulled over 2. The rate of traffic enfocement is now up 100%. It's misleading. I still disagree with the way they do traffic enforcement and hate to see them being mocked by these dudes intent on their little games with the burn-outs etc. Since they do it in the face of anybody BUT a cop they would be mighty surprised if they got nailed by an unmarked car. I think Casanova is flat wrong on that issue. For whatever reason he focuses on rampant copy cats playing cop. There's another alternative if a little less effective & surprising: it's called a "low-pro" car. It is a police car the same as all of them except no lights on the roof. If you're not paying attention you don't realize it's a cop car until it's too late. The point is get the whackjobs off the street. If they have to be a little sneaky about it, who cares?? Status quo doesn't work here.

About Jose's comments, so true. Just not enough cops in relation to crime here. I almost bugged out when Casanova says "you can't have your own personal officers" to that lady. If he's not alotted enough people just say so, no need to twist what someone says to look unrealistic & nutty.

There IS a serious lack of respect for the cops here. If I were them I'd take things a little more seriously in that regard. It's nice to look at the big picture but first a little tough micromanagement is in order with this population. OK enough.

willdetourwhatever - I really like the LT's idea of using the undercover cars to target reckless drivers and then have the marked cars pull the target over. I think this will be very effective.

LT has a point about cop cats and unmarked cars. If you read a lot of stories about "bad guys" using a red/blue light to pull over cars to rob them, it is very dangerous. If the police are engaging in such activities as using unmarked cars for everyday traffic violations then they are inviting "bad guys" to start doing the same.

The other issue is that when you use the unmarked car, you are showing everyone that drives by what car you are using. It becomes easy to tell. Take a look at the CT State police in the mid 90's, they had brand new Camaro's and Mustangs that they where using for undercover pull overs. Everyone quickly knew that there was a good chance a Camaro or Mustang would be a cop. Then they started switching it up, but still, you could pin point the undercover cars when they where pulling people over, it becomes common knowledge.

Jose, I have a background with the police managing service for their vehicle fleets. I guess all agencies work differently, but it was common practice for the pd's, fbi, hidta etc to use what they call "forfiture" vehicles for unmarked purposes. In NY the cars are actually registered to ficticius people & addresses for really hardcore criminals that would go to the trouble of finding out who a specific car is reg to (which is legal in NY don't know abt here). Anyway, since vehicles will become recognized, they are circulated amonst agencies and areas so that doesn't happen. In my experience the vehicles used are mostly higher end american and typically not something a cop wannabe would own or have possession of. The method is effective.

JOHN DOE i agree with you i was there and feel the same as you. One of those ladies made it seem like some of us just went because we have a specific problem now and will never go back. well wasnt that the purpose to voice our opinion on the issues on our area. maybe we cant work with the alderman to set up a specific meeting just for this issue at hand.

i will like to also add that it is my understanding that grand ave GAVA pays an extra tax or something as business oweners on grand for extra police and trash clean up. i may be wrong but believe i read somewhere about this. the RESPECT for police it true a lot of people out here dont have any, and it seems too complicated that all we want is more presence and enforcement in the problem areas to educate these people like the one lady said shes cautious about using her phone to avoid tickets or uses the seatbelt for the same purpose thats because certain areas really enforce it and around here they dont enforce many things they should. when is time for elections or the city is hurting for money then they set up perimeters and target seatbelts or driving under the influence. i am also a witness that a lot of cops around here that grew up in fairhaven are friends with a lot of these low-lifes and look the other way when it happens around them. NHPD should not assigned people to the area that grew up here because the let too much slide. its very embarrassing to see these people behave in such way. i came home and had 6 scotters with youngs kids doing burnouts whichever way they could to mark the street. did i call POLICE? no, according to the meeting they wont go after these kids to avoid bigger problems or someone getting hurt. the night b4 a car parked on the corner a cop came behind it dont know why and didnt ticket it but the meantime at the other corner a burn out, did he acknowlegde it no. My husband is the president of a an old import car club which i am a member of with my 87 restored samurai, we in no way or any of our members go around any neighborhood doing such things we appreciate and have a certain love of old cars and try to organized community events as we did last yr on grand avenue which we got over 300 kids registerd with the CT CHILD ID PROGRAM we gave out coloring books, pencils, toys to each kid that drew a car while they waited their turn. we did this to appeal to these people that u can own a rotary or a musle car without making a fool out of yourself, your neighborhood or culture.

It was like "plants" in the audience. Somebody would put the Lt. on the spot with an issue and all of a sudden someone else pipes up with how wonderful of a job so and so is doing with something totally unrelated. Then the original issue gets blown off or made to seem like you want something crazy or you're just flat wrong. It happened 3 or 4 times. Did anybody else notice that? A lot of deflection. Anaika you got bigger problems than me over there. I would be completely bugging out. When those kids aren't there go pour motor oil all over the place in that spot - I'm not kidding. Or think of something else really nasty & vile that would prevent them from hanging there. An eye for an eye. It will only take a few times. Unfortunately you have to live with whatever you do temporarily.

I also noticed when the Lt. was put on the spot that his friend came to his rescue. The woman Ruffina from Mary Wade Home was his chief supporter there. She is always very chummy with him at the block watch meetings and has his number on speed dial. When anaika brought up the subject of his voice mail being full the 3 times she try to contact him Ruffina was the first to say that not true.

i didnt like the way the Lt. spoke to Jose and his tone FOR YOU TO SIT THERE AND SAY THAT...........we were there to express our concerns of what is happening and to warn them that if no action is taken something someday somehow worst can happen, someone will get killed or hurt. the numbers thank you that is great but we want you to continue to be great by taking more action in certain sections that are hot spots for some of us. We are not children to be addressed certain ways. The oil idea.............believe me it has crossed my mind but as you know the innocent are those who end up paying the price in the end it can be a mother and child that because of something like that skidd thru a stop sign and gets killed. I am a christian and i have outgrown the desire to go toe to toe with these people and going to the police seemed like the proper thing to do again because i am raising kids here that are afraid to ride to the corner in case a car decides to use it as a race track. But i did put oil all over my fence one year. ill have to do that again so they ruin their Ed hardy tshirts when the lean on the fence. lol Planting poison ivy along the fence is next course of action. lol i try to avoid confrontation because these kids and grown men are ghetto and if i dont have the police to back me up then i stand to loose.

I couldn't believe the cell phone bit. If I were Lt. I would have said - well sorry that's possible it could have happened I get a lot of calls. Instead he chose to be defensive & deny it was possible. Back to the issue I just want it safe for me & my dogs out walking or worse a little kid doesn't know better in the streets. We could pick that meeting apart left & right. Things have been calmer here SINCE WE STARTED WRITING ABOUT IT. But the 2 or 3 guys that have diplomatic immunity in the neighborhood are still pulling their sh*t. Worse today actually.

I believe we all need to stand togetter in maken our streets safe to walk or drive. Maybe a phone call ((203) 946-6333) to the chiefs office expression our concerns and how they were met by the Lt. at the meeting. And the Alderman Rodriguez can invite him out for next months meeting.

We surely need to have the chief involved, not to go above the LTs head, but it will be eaiser for him to talk to the chief about getting more officers.

Most imporently I think we have created a voice for the community and we ALL have to be there at the next meet and the ones to follow.

If these community meetings do not work we will have to bring our concerns to a council meeting while the Mayor is there.

Someone said something about a state rep that will be holding a meeting in the area? Anyone have the details on this?

The NH crime log has some info on policing activity, but it is of limited usefulness, since the search feature does not allow you to filter appropriately by neighborhood, date and crime type. Also their data are incomplete.

Anyhow, I went through a couple months and counted by hand the best I could. Here's my rough estimate of M/V violations (tickets) issued in immediate area of your issue report, roughly corresponding to the area bounded by Rowe, Lombard, Clinton and Pine (which includes sections of Grafton, Atwater and Chatham).

April 2009: 5
April 2010: 12

March 2009: 5
March 2010: 6

Obviously there were more tickets given in the surrounding areas, e.g., on Ferry, Grand, etc., but these numbers only include the immediate blocks. I'm not sure how accurate they are given the way the NHPD does its traffic reporting.

As I explained above, it would be interesting to see more complete numbers with the entire neighborhood. We also should be able to understand what the tickets were given for -- e.g., plates or actual unruly driver behavior -- before drawing any conclusions.

Once every neighborhood can document the exact type of traffic enforcement that is currently being done (which, as I explained above, was something demanded by residents but not yet made available), I think it will be easier for residents to make more effective calls for action.

This seems to be THE hot issue for FH according to Clickfix. It certainly can't be ignored if the right ppl follow it. In addition to following up on the proactive suggestions, everybody make sure to keep keep complaining & bringing up specific problems. That way the issue does not die and get swept under the carpet.

I assume most that attended the community meeting and those that write on here are property owners. Ultimately the best course of action is to take steps to price those causing problems right out of the neighborhood. The first steps are to get people with a few bucks to buy & MOVE INTO these foreclosed properties and tough it out for a couple of years. Eventually business owners will take notice and put decent retail in the commercial areas. You end up with a hip and sought after area. It's like anything and I bet Lt. Casanova and his men/women wouldn't mind working in a place like that , enforcing littering/j-walking/seatbelt violations all day long. We would all benefit. Call your cool, law abiding friends that live elsewhere and convince them to buy in the next "IT" area. Everybody reaps the benefits. Right now is the best time trust me.

i agree that most of us who are complaining are property owners and if all would step up and make people respect our street along with the cops we can make a difference. i will add that my neighbors could care less about the issue at hand and i dont care if they read this, most of the people doing this do it right in their face hang there with them if those people were to ever put their foot down and start spreading the word to cool it i am sure some of these people would respect the street and i sure will respect them for putting their foot down, my problem here has always started with them and now around the 120s a family member lives over there so i imagine the think they own the street and whomever the chill with or know feels free to make this a race track, why, because that father and mother allowed it to be so. it seems that on this corner i am the only one that sees this as a problem and since they know it they do it even more. maybe i should move the camera i have from the back yard to the front and put a sign up under surveillance, would the city fine me for invading peoples privacy?. maybe that way they can spread the word to all their homies that im recording so at least its scares them off that i can show it to police.lol i think im up to something here. lol. no with all seriousness i can give a rats a-- what people think of me around here for complaining or dont worry about anyone retaliating against me.

please do place a call on our behalf to the chiefs office and even the mayors office someone can also even put a letter together to the chief and mayors office and we all sign it after the next meeting.

how can we go about having a meeting just for this issue, i will like to continue to go to the meetings on a monthly bases even if the issues were to be ever resolved but i think we need a meeting for this issue only instead of being brushed off like we had happen, also how bout organizing something like goin door to door one afternoon collecting signatures like a petition for police to take more action on the matter to really see how many residents sign that dont communicate using this method, we can get a group of volunteers to do it to avoid people getting tragetted or labeld the complainers like the have me. which i truly careless. im just throwing ideas in the air, feel free to agree or disagree i wont take it personal.

The guy running for rep. certainly seems the right choice for us and the communities agenda, if only because he's from here and knows the place well. It could only benefit us.

And Anaika that's exactly what I'm talking about ppl like your neighbors. Chances are they don't own and if they do they have some kind of mental deficiency. If the place cost $2,000 a month instead of $650 they wouldn't be here. It's not nice in some cases but necessary to really pick the place up. Of course the whole scenario is easier saifd then done. I, for one, know people that would buy here but not live. Therefore the cycle of renters and non-descrimination to section 8 continues. Like I said now is the time with all the foreclosures. I am trying to think of creative ways to get ppl to come to the area to live. Anybody agree with this at all??

The person that brought up the idea about getting together with the person running for rep has a great idea. It is not only about votes, but if we can get him to promise to help our community, put Fair Haven under a "state radar" I am sure issues will be better and faster resolved.

With respect to the LT's comments on crime lowering, he has to remember just because there are not multiple shootings every day, having a couple shootings a week is nothing to jump up and down about and dose not make our streets safe. Just because the police used to not pull cars over for traffic violations and now they are pulling a few cars over is not something that you should be patting your back about.

unbelievable as it may seem, my neighbors are the owners and the father is the first one to be out there along with his late 20something sons along with their friends watching the show and never saying a word, thats why i say if the man were to ever put his put down out there, they will listen, but his mentality gotta be as screwd up as everyone elses around. people do what they can get away we and here they know if home owners arent saying anything but joining the crowd then they continue. i can go out there start yelling and ill be the only one looking like a fool because everyone enjoys it and to top it all in the meeting calling about scootters or motorcycles like i saw today it a waste of time

I agree with you on your comments about the Lt's comments on lowering crime numbers. I don't know if you notice when her read this years number to date he left out the numbers for killings in the city. Was this a slight oversight or was it because we are on track to exceed last years number's.

I live a block away from ground zero of the problems and I cant stand it. It my seem as you alone but your not, there are a good bunch of people in our neighborhood who are with you. I know a few that are older and don't have computers that are tired of all this mess. I agree with we should start collecting signatures like a petition. If someone get it going I would be happy to go door to door on my block to collect signatures.

As far as meeting with the Rep who will at the parks to meet with the community. I think he'll tell us what we want to hear so he can get our vote in Nov. and that will be the last time we see him in the park again. After all isn't that what all elected officals do including Alderman.

J Doe sounds like every politician, but SOMEBODY has to have that job. It may as well be him since he's from the hood. Maybe he'll do something positive that will rub off here. Anaika don't feel defeated just yet. I've heard almost everybody that's been here a while say 'it's been like this for years'. It follows that approaching the problems the same old way hasn't worked for years (or not much). I'm using my imagination and utilizing this forum to speak my ideas. its frustrating at times and i am lucky i work nights but i feel bad for my tennant their bdrm is towards the front i just wonder how they can even sleep and also will she be renewing her lease when the yr is up. What a spirited discussion of FACTS and realities, and as a long time owner-resident (20 + yrs), it heartens me to see fresh erythrocytes infused into the corpus delicti, Fairest Haven! This century however dear friends is better compared to the past, at least on the Dover to Lombard, Ferry to Front quagmire of pills,prostitution,"pop-offs",pimps, & partying all ages & hours of the near past.
It does amaze me that given the dire financial needs of our "mother" city, all of these non law abiding behaviors are permitted to go "untaxed", ie. nobody is ever stopped and CHARGED with a fine for a misdemeanor and then a progressive INCREASE in fees as the individual "racks up" more charges~, heck, isn't that the same as "free money" especially if the miscreant is NOT A HOME OWNER, a taxpayer being hit with a 4 % increase in the NEXT BILL!
And let us not forget that the white or should I say white and base metal grey hooded Nissan and the equally bothersome "leadfooted" driver in the red one, heck if they had been receiving either speeding tickets, noise abatement tickets or going thru stop sign tickets just in the month of MAY, the City of NH would have taken possession of the pink slips by now!
On a positive note: at least the ATVs have taken off to greaner pastures and those of us who own dogs can rest a bit easier as the rock throwers have left the neighborhood !

Good afternoon everyone. I need your help!

Late last night (Sun.) a few residents reported vehicles racing in the Dover/Clinton area however did not leave a desciption of the vehicles.

Due to the way the system works (not speaking in favor if it either) with priority calls etc once the officers came to the area the vehicles fled. If anyone has a color/make/model on the vehicles we might be able to have officers follow up. Please do NOT report make/model on the site but you can email me directly or call the LT., at the number that was given at the meeting. As you all have seen its a cat & mouse game with these individuals and their hyped of vehicles. The more info we can report to the cops they might be able to go to their homes of the people driving these cars or have a plan in place once it occurs again which is periodically.

Well I think I saw the car and I already put in phone calls to the LT. over it. I saw the car again yesterday and called into dispatch to report it and the dispatcher started an argument with me and tried to make me think I was crazy.

"You want us to go after a car that someone posted about on the internet?" - and she continued - I guess this is a good tactict for the New Haven Police not to have to work so hard and I am sooooooo sorry for inturputing this dispatchers nap with reporting a crime in New Haven.

Think it was day before Memorial Day I called. Probly the same car lol. This dispatcher sounded bored out her mind by my call. Listen if you hate it so much I'll take your job!

It would be nice if dispatchers treated this as a life or death situation that dramatically impacts neighborhood quality of life and health, instead of as an everyday occurrence that can be ignored.

I was talking to my 80yo grandmother who lives upstaires from me. I was tell her about your experience with calling Lt. Casanove phone number and finding his voice mail full each time. She told me she has called it several times in the past for the same problems we are haven. She was able to get thru and left voice mail each time with her name and number. She went on to tell me she has never receive a call back from Lt. Casanova.

So I guess if your unable or able to get thru you get the same results from the Lt.

I'm not a politician or do I want to be one. I care about the quility of life in Fair Haven. I also don't refer to my community as the Hood. I believe it is a neighborhood and if the police or our alderman will do nothing then we need to keep putting pressure on them till they do or elect them out and get someone who will help.

I'm sorry I didn't correct that punctuation error. It was supposed to be "J Doe: Sounds like every politician", not " J Doe sounds like every politician" I was talking about your comment right before where you mentioned the Rep would tell us what we want to hear.

One of two things is true about that meeting and Lt.'s responses: Either he underestimates the seriousness of what goes on, or he's heard it all before from a hundred different people and groups and doesn't think we are committed to helping them combat the problems. So he has standard answers to things. I'm guessing it's the latter. For me, I'm just going to keep plugging away with calls to NHPD and attending meetings. Don't know what else to do.

I know Alderman Rodriguez reads this because he has responded to a few comments. What do you think about the meeting Mr. Rodriguez? Do you think that the LT. actually listened to our concerns? Do you think that the LT. was possibly sitting up there mocking Anaika about he not being able to get in contact with him?

As person elected to deal with such problems in our community what do you think can be done to resolve these issues?

Well for one, I am not going to engage in the exchange between the LT. and Anaika. You had those who stated they reach out and he was very responsive and others who unfortunately did not have the same response. Should of the LT perhaps of stated "my apologies" and call it a day? We all handle scenarios differently...

The issue at hand though are our concerns in the Dover/Atwater/Rowe area which we should continue to focus on because I think we initiated a very important conversation. I have no objections in organizing a smaller meeting to discuss the concerns in that respected area compared to a meeting of everyone. (which is the management team) We could perhaps meet at Clinton Ave School if no one has objections? I can tell you that, yes some matters which have been reported have already been addressed. Police are requesting vehicle information to go after those who are speeding/noise nuisance. A conversation was had with the captain in charge of the traffic unit, the Rowe St Apartment Complex was condemned, the sound barrier on Dover was repaired, the shoes hanging from Atwater were removed etc...

Though more work needs to be done. If the residents in the Dover/Atwater/Rowe area would like to organize a block watch I will be more then happy to do so. A block acts as a phone tree among residents to report crimes etc. It also provided you with a "block watch number" so when you call the police you do not have to leave a name/address. Jose, on Pine Street which is by where you reside they have an active block watch called the Ferry/Grafton/Pine block watch. Residents in that area meet often to address these very concerns. If you would like I can email you the chairs contact. I too attend those meetings when I can.

On Dover its been quite a bit quieter the last few days. I saw a parked police car with radar thing hanging off it yesterday on the south side of Dover. Things are being done no doubt. I'm sure I speak for everybody when I say we just want the enforcement to continue so it stays this way. I don't know if its been quieter on Atwater. I'm willing to participate in a block watch.

I have said it before here your not the Alderman for my area of Atwater st. Stephanie Bauer is. Maybe you can Invite her as I don't see her present on this subject or any other subject for that matter. I don't mean to get of subject here but on election day last year her people called my house 4 times to make sure I got out and voted and that was the last time I have seen or heard from her.

I noticed that the Basketball Hoop is gone at 120 Atwater st and now you can drive thru without all the kids in the street. I don't know if it was LCI who took it away but thank you.

i spoke to Lorie Lopez from LCI she deals with the hoop removal she said the owner was told to remove it and got mad and took a hammer to it and distroyed it, i also noticed they put another one almost at the corner of atwater and chatham and she says those people were also told to remove it that they give them a few days. today it is still there.

I would also like to comment about Stephanie Bauer, I called her one time and she called me back at 8pm on a Saturday while I was with my family out of state. I asked her to call me back on Monday and she explained that she only deals with calls on Thursdays.

I have never heard back from her again. Stephanie Bauer is my Alderwoman, but I think she is the type of Alderwoman that just likes to have the title and not the responsibilities of actually doing anything in the community.

Alderman Rodriguez would receive my vote even though I am not in his district. I think when election time comes around I will be doing a writein for Mr. Rodriguez.

I have never seen Stephanie Bauer post to any of these boards, on any subject. She has not been out in the community and certainly did not attend the management meeting this month (not sure if she ever has any other months).

Well the rain is gone and it was a great day outside and the bike, scooters are back out in force today. I just spent the last hour outside and there back to running the stop signs. I just had two kids in front of my house on scooters doing tricks on there scooters.

I didn't forget the cars rolling thru the stop signs as they blast that stuff they call music.

God I pray for the rain to return so they will all go inside again. Because I don't expect anything from NHPD

I know the NHPD have been doing more work in the Dover/Atwater area of late however you are absolutely right. I walked Dover Street for a solid 2 hrs today speaking to residents. In the course of those 2 hrs I can't believe how many vehicles I seen with no respect for the rules of the road; rolling through stop signs, peeling rubber, the ATVS etc. I am in the process of calling/emailing the LT and informing him of the work that needs to be done in your area.

Yes I do agree NHPD did a traffic stop a few days ago around 6am. But that was the only one I saw. I'm glade you got out to see for yourself what we are talking about in this area. Yes, I noticed a red Mustand did a nice burnout 20 feet from you & Lemar when you were across the street from my house. I notice Jon mentioned the Lt. might want to observe this himself "out of uniform". Kind of my thoughts too. Not to beat a dead horse but I hope he reconsiders his position on unmarked vehicles for his area. If not unmarked then "lowpro" (marked cars w/no roof lights) which tend to surprise people that aren't paying attention. I sold & serviced police vehicles for more than 10 years. I know what police say & think about their vehicles and these cars are an integral part of enforcement.

Alderman Rodriguez, can we get you to walk up my street a few times for 30 min, nevermind 2 hours...and I know it is out of your district, but you would be amazed in how many people will speed, I mean clear cut doing 50 miles down this road, slowing down for the stop sign to a near 30 miles an hour, cutting the curb and heading down the other street.

little more action over on chatham street, another call towed away on chatham after it was parked in front of his house, the owner apparently broke something on it as it sped up and down testing its turbo. a cop drove by him twice after the call was put in but finally they anwered the call about an hour later and towed the car i am assuming it wasnt registered. Two persistent calls two cars towed in two weeks on the same street. Come On neighbors lets all keep our eyes open and keep making those calls to make them respect a bit

Chatham Street: Was this another infamous older Nissan Sentra 2-door?? New silver paint? That's the newest act of terror here on Dover. Sunday, up & down the street 3-4 times at LEAST 60-70 mph. Definately had nitrous or something. We need to get rid of these morons already.

I'm still on it. I am awaiting confirmation from the board of education to use Clinton Ave School. I am pushing for the lask week of June/first week of July to ensure we have enough time to invite folks. (leaning on last week of June)

I keep seeing three guys on scooter green, blue and yellow doing trick on the scooter. Driven around in circles at the intersection of Atwater and Grafton. One passed me on the right yesterday between a parked car.

What about those firework on Atwater and Chatham, and it's only going to get worse as we get to the 4th. Last year they made a mess of the whole area with the spent fireworks.

If the meeting we're going to have might possibly result in some police action, the last week in June is probably imperative. Personally I haven't been here on a July 4th weekend but I can imagine it's quite a spectacle just in terms of what we've been discussing here. Just when I said things calmed down on Dover, it started to get bad again with cars & MCs. Last night was like a dragstrip starting at Atwater toward Ferry. 3 separate incidents of cars lighting up their tires at the stop sign getting up to top speed. Also 2 motorcycles at insane speed the same direction. I can't give any details, just heard did not see.

Anaika wrote the issue we are all commenting on after I brought it up twice the same things were happening on Dover St.

If "wilding" with cars and ATVs & motocycles is such an acceptable practice, why don't you call your Alderman and explain your reasoning to him? I'm sure he'll laugh in your face but give it a shot. Call the NHPD area manager and complain to him those people doing burnouts and driving crazy should have every right to do so. Maybe he will have a sympathetic ear.

The fact is Anaika by far isn't the only who has a problem with this sh*t. And that's exactly what it is - sh*t. There are burnt rubber marks all over the street in that area. It looks like a dragstrip. What do you (or people doing it) think happens when somebody goes to look at a house for sale in that area? They're not deaf and blind to what's going on. The ghetto behavior is RUINING PROPERTY VALUES and/or keeping them low. As homeowners and taxpayers we are not going to continue to let it happen. Not Branford? As if being like Branford is a bad thing. Trust me when I say things are going to change sooner than you expect. Enjoy your last days of BS it's over.

I'm sad that this has turned into a personal thing. First of all, making sweeping generalizations and assumptions about folks you don't know personally doesn't solve anything, and it weakens our credibility as a community and as individuals.

I didn't know the young man who died on Atwater, but I remember walking past the crime scene with my kids who were very upset on our way to plant trees with URI and other neighborhood residents. It was sad and scary. What I do know as a member of our community is that Atwater felt unsafe for quite a long time after the young man was killed.

My condolences to his family and friends, no one deserves to lose a loved one. However, the way some mourners handled it was inappropriate and disrespectful, which is why it made this thread. There were a lot of speeding cars and bikes, people were not parked in a way that was considerate of neighbors, other neighborhood residents, or anyone who needed to get down Atwater, for that matter; and there were large groups of guys hanging out drinking, glaring at everyone who tried to get past, and just generally being loud, disrespectful, and, frankly, frightening for quite awhile.

My kids were terrified to drive down Atwater while this was going on, which is awful. We call this community and neighborhood home, and my kids were really, really frightened. I was too stubborn to give in when I was alone, though I felt I was being intentionally intimidated, but, out of respect for my kids, I did not drive down Atwater with them until things cooled off.

There is no right and wrong way to grieve, I know that firsthand from my own losses. However, intimidating and disrespecting others doesn't seem an appropriate way to pay tribute to someone you love.

The title of the tag is "constant speeding" which is something I have/ and will continue to work to address with those who brought the concern forth. We have a community meeting scheduled for next Wednesday at 6 PM at Clinton Avenue School to discuss just that among other policing concerns in the Atwater/Dover area. Lets please focus on the issue at hand and work together. Negative postings and false allegations will not resolve our concerns as a community. What will resolve matters is a combination of working together with police and other departments to address them.

I look forwarding to seeing you all at our meeting and please united we stand, divided we fall lets all work together!

Fellow neighbors,

I am not sure all of you realize that each posting to this page is emailed to hundreds of "watchers." I am one such watcher (I live on Chatham Street) and I have sat by for weeks now as you all have bickered, insulted one another, and generally polluted my inbox and the inboxes of many other people with irrelevant trash that is doing nothing to help anybody, and certainly is not doing anything to address this particular issue (as Ald Rodriguez pointed out).

I have flagged this SCF ticket as inappropriate in the hopes that it will be removed. I will also be flagging any and all personal, insulting, or off-topic posts. It is not about censorship, it is about what is and is not appropriate and useful in the context of this page.

If you do not have anything productive to say, please do us all a favor and do not say anything at all. Specifically, I would encourage all of you NOT to respond to other people's personal attacks. It is not helpful and just results in more arguing. Thank you.

Wow this is so off topic!!! Great job to the thugs in the community. You have almost successfully damaged our correspondences to the correct people about dealing with you thugs in the appropriate manner.

No we will not lower our standers down to your level and go after you with knives and guns. Welcome to the peaceful resolution process. I know it takes much longer then just shooting someone dead to resolve the problem. But I think we are in this for the long hall and are committed to having our community leaders take a strong stance against you thugs.

@Maria and @Anaika - Don't bring yourselves down to their level, they want you to respond and to get you upset. They want to make you feel bad, they thrive on things like that. Please do not fall for it.

Ok well if you read all my post you would see me saying that yes the racing and stuff with the cars are very dangerous and shouldn't be happening any where in this country but once again the only reason why we are taking it personal is because they are attacking the cruz family for being 100% the reason why this is happening on this street when it is not... Everyone from every where do this on all these street of nee haven fair haven etc. And we can only tell our friends to be respectful which we have but other people we have no control over

@eileen yes there are a few comments of mine, there were never meant to be hid away, i put my real name and as a result got blamed by you and others as if i made all 175 of them, as you read the other person say all of us get hundreds of these emails daily about whats concerning the people in the city to make it a bit safer, cleaner and etc so yes i reply here and there.

the street felt unsafe with the shooting of emilio and yes is unfortunate some people trash things about the memorial so lets let those people deal with their own conciense, but thats not our issue here, this issue is about working together to make it safer for our kids due to the cars using this like a race way. i have been on vacation every year since around the anniversity or just return around that day and heard the good and bad about it. everyone has an opinion. well so be it, we cant change peoples mindset or greiving ways. i do hate though when i get blamed for things like sending the cops over down the street just because i took part in this blog. that is just wrong but i know i didnt and it will be more of a waste to convince people otherwise think what you want.

Why do you keep removing my comment there is nothing that violates your terms of service. These are my opinions and facts from the news article.

Several people have come on this thread in the last couple days to try to divert the attention from cars racing, ill planned memorials, cars screeching their tires and an overall bad element of people in the neighborhood doing bad things. These actions are not OKAY for one minute, not one hour and surly not for one day. They are period blank UNACCEPTABLE.

It is very immature to compare us to Branford, yes we should have the same peace as they do in Branford. We should be able to walk down our street without having to worry about a car hitting us. Our kids should be able to ride their bikes down the street with no worries. People should stop and stop signs. Car radios should be at a reasonable level as to not be heard while people are trying to enjoy the peace of their own home. Cars should not be creating unnecessary noises such has pealing out. Little kids should not be vandalizing our cars and stop signs and anything they can find to vandalize.

This is not to much to ask in a civilized world!!!

you hit it right on the money when you said you can tell your friends to be respectful, we all know these people are from all over but at least or at least i would be very grateful if more people like you did that, we cant control anyone of course but if we see it and allow it then we are condoning it and in one of my early blogs that was the point with the family your were speaking about. i think if he took a minute to tell these kids to cool it they respect him enough to listen this is why this family was brought into the blog at least by me. if i sit outside and let it happen it seems like i am condoning in but if i knew some of them sometimes as a mature person if you have a good relationship with the people causing a lot of the problem then i am sure they will respect a bit more. this is why so much of this blog got out of context because most people took offense in a different way. you can go down the worst street in the hill crack sales or where most shooting occur and at times its more peaceful that over here and thats a shame. we should all be proud of where we live without the comments of this is just fair haven. home is what you make it and we all live here or around here. it a shame at time the way people react when i say im from fair haven like they look down on you, why? because some people make it that way.

Those of us who have complained about this issue numerous times just want it to stop. Personally I think it's a shame when a young guy dies senselessly. Most normal people feel that way. But don't try to justify bad behavior with some convoluted story about a memorial. As a taxpayer and property owner in this neighborhood I simply won't put up with it anymore. We deserve to live in a peaceful, quite, safe environment. Period. Take it or leave it.

Was talking this morning with neighbors for more than an hour about street racing in another section of New Haven. There seems to be a major dissatisfaction with traffic enforcement that should be harnessed to implement real, lasting change at a citywide level.

A band aid solution like a few traffic stops, rotating from neighborhood to neighborhood each month, isn't sustainable - as I've explained above, I think that having a way for the neighborhoods to look at the data on traffic enforcement and see what is actually being done each month is the only way to do it.

I agree 100%. It would have to be a culture change(?) as to how PD deals with this issue. What good would accumulating data on enforcement do? I'm not understanding what would be done with it.
