Definitely add a right-turn lane. There's no reason to make people wait 20 cars back if they want to make a right turn into Adam's. Why allow a line of traffic to wait unnecessarily? Waiting through a couple of green-light cycles to get to the light is stupid and frustrating - it can lead to road rage and increases pollution.

This whole setup is dangerous.If the people arent using the shoulder they speed up from the left lane and cut you off to get into the right lane heading north.The left lane to turn is visibly marked and a only a small amount of traffic use it..but the rest speed directly from behind and cross over to the right.
The DOT needs to put a median in place to force the drivers to stay in the proper lanes or a guard rail,a wire highlighted down the center.The town of Ulster [police show up for speeders when there is no traffic
but when theres heavey duty traffic there isnt a cop in site or a state trooper. The constant cutting off is a huge serious problem .SO to our local police officers be there when it is busy left is for left and right is for right the area is well accomadating for the situation to start with.. DOT do your job and fix this its just time before someone gets killed because of the cutting off and the speed use to do it..

This should definitely be marked as a right-turn lane. It happens so often because there is so much traffic flowing this way; if everyone obeyed the roadway markings, I suspect traffic would become much worse on 9W. If traffic backed up on 9W, it would become difficult, or even impossible, to use the entrance/exit ramp from 9W North to Route 209. It's already very difficult to get into the right lane with all the traffic weaving at that cloverleaf intersection.

There's room here for a right-turn lane, and even if the town had to take land by eminent domain, I doubt there'd be much of a fuss -- it's not a particularly valuable strip of land. Not much else could be built upon it anyway.

I'll agree it should be fixed, but proper enforcement of traffic laws can go a long way. These types of traffic problems are dangerous only because people have stopped following the traffic laws.Proper speed, stopping, merging, use of turn signals and common courtesy are falling by the wayside because some people have to be somewhere else faster than you or me. Enforce these laws, triple the fines and improve traffic, respect for others, and safety. Don't forget, when people get into accidents, police mark it as no fault and everyone's insurance goes up.

first of all, before you ILLEGALLY move into that right hand lane, you should make sure that no one else is coming from behind you. that would require one looking in to the rear view and passenger side view mirrors! now, if people could stay off of their cell phones, that might improve safety as well. and as far as police enforcing the laws .... with all of the budget cutbacks, and less cops on the roads, it is difficult for police to be proactive anymore. keep this in mind when september comes around and municipalities want to lay off cops.

When coming off the ramp from 199/209 Westbound, the traffic is never given an opportunity to get onto 9W North. People naturally use the road there as a turn lane to Adam's, and a merge lane for 9W North. As a driver, try to show a little courtesy for the merging traffic, and don't be in such a hurry to not lose your place at the red light. A little courtesy can go a long way toward avoiding anger and accidents.

That having been said, it does make sense for intersections/driveways such as this to have an actual "right-turn lane" so that people wishing to turn into Adams' may have a properly-marked, clearly-visible staging area to wait until it is safe to make their turn.

Confusion is the problem here. The words, "provided it is authorized" means that there should be a sign clearly posted that says it is ok to turn. Without the sign, the turn at Adams remains ambiguous. Legal or not? Still don't know.

The problem exists because not everyone uses the shoulder. There is nothing marking the shoulder as a turning lane. Therefore, when I turn, I turn from the driving lane. I have been almost broadsided twice by cars speeding along on the shoulder because they don't want to wait for the line of traffic before turning into Adams. I don't care what they do. They just need to make it clear what is the legal (and safe for everyone) thing to do.

First of all, The DOT and the town of Ulster should NEVER have given Adams the ok for a curb-cut that close to an entrance ramp!
Second, This should definitely be addressed when the town completes the mall road to Grant Ave. Possibly a different entranced into Adams parking lot? and close the existing one.
In the mean time, an inexpensive fix is just a few "Jersey Barriers"or curbing, placed at an angle, on the end of the shoulder, forcing cars to only turn right from the right lane. essentially, closing the shoulder, at the entrance to the parking lot. This in conjunction with ,proper timing of the light, with the new one installed at Quick Check should make life a whole lot easier.
For the people who feel justified driving on the shoulder because they just don't have the time to wait, Too BAD!

I agree with you 100%. The question is.... who needs to take care of this? I raised the concern 4 MONTHS ago. About 60 other people see this as a problem. Is it going to take a serious accident (and a law suit - since this has been raised in a public venue and someone will have to explain why it hasn't been addressed before now) before something is done about it?

What is so dangerous about this turn? If people were paying attention to the road instead of talking on their cell phones, there would not be a problem. This complaint is totally ridiculous!

The dangerous thing about this turn is that there is no Right Turn Only lane, so drivers squeeze in on the shoulder, only to cut off people who are in the correct driving lane who want to turn right.

How hard would it be to get a striping truck there and make a Right Turn Only lane, so that people could have an actual lane in which to turn from?

The worst part of the issue is that Police sit across the street at the old Miron factory, and WATCH people breaking traffic laws, and do absolutely nothing!!!!! What a joke..................

I have often thought of turning, from the actual driving lane, and cutting off someone in the shoulder... or perhaps, letting them hit me. Sue the driver (driving in the shoulder), the City (failure to mark the shoulder and maintain safe driving conditions), State (failure to police the intersection and maintain safe driving conditions) and Federal (9W is an Interstate Highway) Governments. Show me the money!

It really is a lawsuit waiting to happen, which is why I am so surprised that the issue is so slow to be addressed and fixed.

Adams isn't the only place where cars might right turns on the shoulder. I make the turn into Adams in the right lane only, so I always check before I make the turn. Other cars entering the road at the same spot make a dangerous situation.

71 votes and still nothing has been done to address this situation. It has been 10 months since I reported this problem. On several occasions I have come close to being hit because I turn from the driving line and others have been speeding along on the shoulder to avoid waiting. I've reported the problem here and have reported it to Adams. Still nothing has been done. I'm beginning to think this site is a joke, since no one has stepped up to take care of the problem. At least if there ever IS a serious accident, the person will have proof that the city knew about the problem, but choose to do nothing.

They should use cement medians to correct the whole stretch, including passing from the left lane ONLY, with the arrow then speeding up to cut fast into the right lane ......when someone gets seriouslyl hurt then just maybe then something will be done,as usual a lawsuit always follows..
This situation is done soley by the public driving as they want to regardless of the rules of the road and safety....Adams isnt really to blame it is the driving public and they are extremely careless

That area is a danger in general. If you drive in the right lane, you are at risk of getting cut off from the left and at risk from the merging traffic from the right from Rt 209. It appears the left lane is the safest lane to be in to avoid all the changing of lanes and merging going on.

The wheels of government turn ever so slowly.... It has been 2 1/2 years since I raised this concern. To date, nothing has been done about it. From time to time, the police sit there and ticket those who are driving on the shoulder, which leads me to believe that turning from the shoulder into Adam's is illegal. Last week at 7:45am I almost got broadsided again while turning from the driving lane... this time the car who almost hit me was one of the managers from Adams, whom I assume was running late to work and was speeding along on the shoulder. Enough is enough. When is this issue going to finally be addressed and remedied?

2 1/2 years is nuts. I see this happen every day, going to and coming home from work. I often think, as Sharon has experienced. "what if a RESPONSIBLE driver is turning from the DRIVING lane and some fool driving on the shoulder slams into them"? It is totally insane that this has not been dealt with yet. PLEASE do something about this! Is is going to take someone getting killed in a car accident for a fix to happen? I certainly hope not.

When the mid-hudson medical building project can move forward, this will be resolved. They hit a snag when they initially started work on the site across the street. Probably will not be resolved until/unless that project moves forward OR should Adams decide to make some sort of site plan modification.

This issue is most definitely NOT closed as the problem still exists. This issue will remain open until the state DOT does something about it.

You know, it figures that we would still have to be talking about this after 2 1/2 years without anything being done about it! The pace of repairs/replacements/upgrades to our roads and bridges in this town is GLACIAL! I mean, look how long it took for anything to even come to the table on the Washington Ave./Hurley Ave. debacle!

As far as I'm concerned, the entire Route 209/9W/Mall Entrance and all its ancillary multitude of driveways and other little roads surrounding it, need to be COMPLETELY upgraded. Those roads are pretty much exactly the way they have been since the 1970's, and SEVERELY need to be modernized! Better shoulders, better lighting, more-modern enter and exit ramps, improved reflectors and curbs, more-appealing landscaping... These are all the things that are essential for the entrance into a town in order to be welcoming and viable for the "tourism" the county is pushing for so badly-- not the rocky, dusty, shabby, pothole-filled, decrepit logging-trail roads we have in this area now!

This was taken care of in the past couple of years.....finally. No more close calls.
