How about coming up with an ordinance outlawing birds and squirrels from doing the same while we're at it. No animals can defecate in Raleigh, period.

I have seen a Woman Officer pick up after her horse.

I posed this same issue last summer about horses pooping on the sidewalk near Moore Square and left for people to step in.

That being said....fix the horse poop...or get rid of them. They don't do us any favors. I'd rather see the money devoted to motorcycle cops (Russ has to love that!), who can actually focus on speeders (I, being one, I must admit), and making our streets safer.

The Mounted Officers form an important service in downtown. Of course their first priority is responding when they receive an emergency call, but when they are not actively involved in a call they do the best they can to clean up after their horses as soon as is reasonable possible. To that end, Mounted Officers carry a small broom and dustpan in their saddlebags and a larger broom and trash can in their horse trailer. Some difficulty arises when a Mounted Officer is riding solo and has no place to tether their horse while sweeping up, but this is an exception rather than a rule. During planned events (parades, color guards, etc.), someone is assigned to follow the Mounted Unit and sweep up the waste. Anyone who believes that the Mounted Officers are being less than diligent in their duties can certainly contact the Department with specifics and we will ensure that procedures are being followed. Personally, I like the horses. It makes the police officers more approachable, in my opinion.
