The attached video is from this past weekend, demonstrating how it's impossible to determine when it is safe for a pedestrian to cross the street.

Red light means go,faster..They're continuing because you and other pedestrians are just standing there..No wonder the cop for the recent construction was standing in the bushes..A car comes up from Hillside towards Prospect St., it has a green light,so it takes a right turn then sees the light green and takes it's left.The pedestrians at Edwards & Prospect see the light red for cars coming up Edwards to Prospect,meaning people and bikes have the right of way,just have to step on into it,they'll stop for you

What you don't see from that video (if you don't already know how the intersection works) is that traffic coming from the north on Prospect have a green left-turn arrow. The point of the original post, I think, is that there is no way as a pedestrian to tell if the green turn arrow is active or not. A pedestrian signal would be beneficial for this reason.

Thanks, Michael, for elaborating on my point. Yes, there is a left green arrow coming from the other side of the intersection that is completely invisible to pedestrians, who have no indication when it is okay to walk.

This intersection is currently under construction and will be receiving a pedestrian signal as a part of the overall project. The current completion date is estimated for September of 2012.
