I live in Brandon Mill Summit. I drive through the intersection of Abernathy and Johnson Ferry/Brandon Mill to go south towards my office at Century Springs on Mt Vernon every single weekday. I get stuck in the Southbound Brandon Mill Traffic during the early morning from about 7:30 to 8:00 and I cannot get through the intersection when the cars do not stop or yield from the right turn lane onto Johnson Ferry.
When my light is green from Brandon Mill for me to go through the intersection onto Johnson Ferry people in that right turn lane do not stop or yield. It leaves all of us trying to cross Abernathy either stuck in the intersection or sitting through multiple cycles of the light. Can a red light be installed for the right turning traffic that would make them wait during my green cycle of the light? Like a no turn on red several seconds before our light turns green? Just to create a path and space for us to cross? I regularly wait through 2-3 cycles of the light and traffic behind me is backed up almost to my neighborhood at North Mill Rd.

We received your request regarding drivers on Johnson Ferry Rd (JFR) failing to yield folks heading southbound on Brandon Mill Rd (towards City Hall) when they have the green light. We did receive a similar observation this morning in addition to yours. I did watch the footage from 7:30-8:00am both today and yesterday, but it appeared drivers were yielding when Brandon Mill Rd had a green. Is there a more specific time this has happened? I will talk to the PD traffic unit to get their thoughts on whether or not there is a failure to yield happening.
Operationally, having an arrow that turns red would increase delays in an already overly-congested corridor. If anything, the most likely solution would be enforcement of the existing yield sign.

A better response might be to say that you can fully understand the problem, though you didn’t see it on the days you observed, but that, at least, you’ll add some suitable signage, e.g., “Yield Before Turning” or “Stop Before Turning” AND, maybe, even ask the SSPD to place a patrolman at that intersection to observe the potential problem and, then, provide additional vehicle safety suggestions.
Just a silly thought…

Thank you for your response to my see click fix report. The 2 days you and your department may have viewed intersection cameras at the hour I am concerned about were not a typical weekday experience that I have regularly as a resident who lives on and travels south on Brandon Mill Rd. I do this every single weekday to get to my office located in City Springs.
Attached find a photograph I took after waiting an inordinate amount of time to get to the intersection in question. Also attached find a screen grab of my dropped pin location I sent to my office staff on Aug 31, 7:42 am to alert them as to when I would expect to arrive at the office in Century springs on Mt Vernon at Lake Forrest, and the picture was to demonstrate why I was late.
While any concern about existing congestion is understandable, that congestion is as a result, primarily of Cobb County drivers who come over the bridge and use Johnson ferry to get to their destination through Sandy Springs.
It would be my hope, and I’m sure the hope of other Sandy Springs residents that you would be inclined to have a higher level of concern for Sandy Springs residents and their traffic/congestion frustrations. As a GDOT widening project the Abernathy Johnson Ferry intersection has turned out to be very problematic intersection for all.
Again, whose wait time and congestion impact should take precedence?
I hope you will please do further study and observations of this intersection over a much longer period of time to see multiple days or weeks of actual real time waiting time for the southbound drivers from Brandon Mill attempting to cross through the intersection.
Thank you for your further attention to this important matter.
