Has anyone thought about the fact that this person may only be intending to live here for a year or so? Or may be in school? In which case, said person is not required to change state of residence. Also, in terms of taxes, in order to get a street parking permit, the person does have to pay property tax in new haven even if the car is not registered here. In this case, if the car is parked there year round, then that person has paid taxes to new haven.

you are required to register your car in the city of new haven and pay property taxes even if you are a graduate student (there is, however, flexibility if the person were an undergraduate). you do not have to change the plates if you so choose, but to me, it sounds like tax evasion if you don't.

The only issue regarding an out of state plate, is whether the state gets the $95 registration and emissions testing fee. New Haven taxes cars regardless of state plate. If the person is parking without a valid parking permit, then maybe he/she is parking for free. But the New Haven tax assessor is generally pretty good about tracking down cars like this.

Wooster Sq is full of transient residents, so why is it unusual to see a car with out of state plates. In fact, I just walked down the street and counted 8 out of state plates. Kind of seems like a ridiculous thing to post on this site.

I may be wrong, and please someone correct me of I am, but I'm pretty sure I've seen that car being driven by the guy who lives in the old Italian consulate on Academy and Court with his wife and two young kids.

In any case, the city seems to be quite adept of tracking down property tax offenders. Maybe they'll address it soon.

Steve, if you are going to post one car with out of state plates, you should post them all. Or, do you just have a personal vengance against this person? There are numerous cars parked on Academy with out of state plates...why single out this one? Seems personal to me

The police go down Academy St just about every day ticketing cars. Don't you think if there was an issue with this car, or any of the other out of state cars, it would have been already addressed?

Why report is to the assessor's office? The assessor is required by law to live in New Haven, but his vehicles are registered in Southington.
From the New Haven Register:
"According to the Southington tax assessor’s office, O’Brien has two vehicles, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a boat trailer, registered to his house on Moore Hill Drive in Southington. His 2003 Ford F-150 is assessed for $6,420, his 1999 Ford Explorer for $3,060 and a 1980 boat trailer for $300. His 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, with license plate that says “GO EZ,” is assessed for $6,520. With Southington’s tax rate of 24.02 mills, O’Brien’s tax bill comes to about $391. If those same vehicles were registered in New Haven and had the same assessed values, his tax bill would be about $715. New Haven’s tax rate of 43.9 mills, is almost double that of Southington."
I don't see why anyone in New Haven should follow any of the laws, as the people who right the laws, and enforce the laws apparently don't have to abide by the laws. Laws are only for the little people. Works the same way all over the world.

SInce when is reporting a scofflaw a "snitch"? Why don't you pay the car taxes on the car? We all pay to make up the difference when some people don't pay their share.
And I think not paying taxes is a problem. Maybe C. Jordan should move to the woods and live off the land!

That would be the very definition of the word 'snitch', TC. What else would it mean? And though I'd love to have it, the Porsche is not mine. So I guess that's why *I* don't pay the taxes on the car. And as far as moving to the woods and living off the land - ha! Listen, anyone who stays here long enough will have to pay the tax man in every way possible. When Porsche guy needs to register his vehicle, or get a sticker, or something, he'll have to pay. Plus I know for a fact that the police troll down here looking for reasons to collect fines anyway.

I understand that New Haven needs the tax revenue for schools and repairs and all the things that make the city run. But everywhere charges taxes. Including Vermont. And before you go snitching to the police, consider that some people's lives aren't exactly like yours. I just got out of the Marine Corps. I had California tags in God knows how many states and municipalities, all the while paying taxes to San Diego. The law allows for that.

In Cuba, citizens spy on one another and report suspected subversion to the local chapter of the Communist Party. They are organized in every city, and called the local Committees for the Defense of the Revolution. It is a police state. But, I hear they are selling houses now. Maybe you should look into one, TC.

I don't think commenters are understanding this. You can have out of state plates and STILL pay New Haven car taxes. Want to find out if there's a tax record? If you know the owner of the car, you can look it up on the city's website. The city's pretty good at tracking you down for this, so I'd be surprised if he wasn't paying taxes.

Interestingly, the week after this issue was raised, and after about two years of this vehicle being parked on Academy year-round, the expensive Porche with Vermont plates disappeared.

Even now, this is the dumbest thing to engage with adult children on other people's business, but I will set the record straight: I am a taxpaying, law abiding citizen. I appreciate this site because it is a collaborative forum to fix things around our community - it's the internet at its local best. Helping the police watch my neighbors -- a step too far for this free man. That's the internet at its local worst. Call me what you will, but tell it to the wind as this is officially my last post to this "resolved" incident.

Chris, I guess you like to dish it out but you can't take it. If you wish for this site to be a useful, collaborative forum for people to air their complaints and help make the community, cleaner, safer , and nice, then you should keep your rude comments to yourself ("snitch"). But this is a good place to stop on this matter and move on. Though we disagree, we both have the right to our opinion and have to tolerate other viewpoints. Otherwise, all will be lost anyway.

I do not understand how O'Brien, the tax assessor got away with not paying his taxes here. He should have been fired. DeStefano was not doing his job when he gave him a pass. What about our aldermen? They should have been on this and should have done something about it. Now I understand that O'Brien was allowed to retire from the city of New Haven and I doubt he retired without the benefits he does not deserve. We should be up in arms over this kind of politics. We need to hold the people we elect accountable for not looking out for the citizens who elect them. Is anyone else interested in seeing justice?

Does this car have a purple updated parking permit?

This car is back again. I suppose the owner took it to a friend or neighbor's house for awhile and now feels it's safe to bring back an expensive car with out-of-state plates, to satisfy the terms of the law. However, this car has consistently been parked IN NEW HAVEN without a state plate for at least two years -- and by that I mean more than six months each calendar year.
It's unconscionable that a good citizen would stiff his neighbors with paying the tax that he's purposely not paying.

It is possible the owner can be a student from another state. St. John Street has a car from Colorado and another out of state plate with current parking stickers that go back two and three years!

Has anyone thought that perhaps this is someone's summer car? That maybe it spends the majority of the year in Vermont? That maybe the owner dates someone that lives on Academy St? That maybe the ower is a student? If the motive here is to collect taxes dur to the city, then why isn't every car with out of state plates posted on this site? It's as if you people are stalking this person. Perhaps I'll put a see click fix complaint about stalkers in the neighborhood.
